Hey everyone, new member here... Brought here by the Hobbyphilic review videos.

I've had dice chips in the past, but now I want a nice set. Watched reviews and ordered samples of majestic, pharaohs, Milano, mint, Monte Carlo, and scroll.

After getting my samples in hand, I think I'm down to 1. Pharaoh (not Paulson pharaohs), 2. Majestic from apache... with Milano's in semi distant 3rd place. Im also thinking about ordering plaques

Any advice on those two brands? Any thoughts on the plaques?

Thanks!

I was you 3 months ago. Kiss your wallet goodbye.

For me Pharaoh's, Majestics and Milano's are basically the same - it feels like they all came out of the same factory just with different molds and labels.

Hey @Hobbyphilic, you're credited with passing the sickne.. uh, enthusiasm for chipping again! Good work!

Advice from a China Clay owner (more of less the bulk of the sets you mentioned):

Milano are sort of harder to get these days and are showing signs of aging poorly in the higher denominations. I can't recommend them.

Pharaoh, same deal with Milanos, but a shade better quality and more interesting to boot. They, occasionally, have shown signs of aging poorly. Flaking, discoloration, etc. Less frequent, but still an issue.

Mint - slugged ABS chips. If you're going slugged ABS, I think @Darson might vouch for the Outlaw set. I don't actually hate the slugged ABS of this variety. I have samples of the Desert Heat and the Bank (I think?). They're pretty much the same base with a different label. If you go this route, get samples of the Poker Knights/Monaco set as well. They have a better feel than the Claysmith offerings. They also have a nicer label (it's kind of laminated).

Get samples of the Dunes China Clay (I have 1100 of these) on Apache's site as well. They're the latest (-ish) China Clay order. Comparably better than the previous iterations of China Clays, but too new to decide if they suffer the same fate as Milano and Pharaoh's.

Scrolls are ceramics - a nice alternative to the aforementioned sets. If you like ceramic, @ABC Gifts and Awards has great stock models to choose from. I suggest looking at Tiki Kings as well if this is your speed. They vary slightly between manufacturers.

Plaques totally depend on what kind of game you intend to run. I picked up a handful of the Dunes $100k plaques to run high denom short handed and heads-up tournaments (also they're sweet).

All of this said, you're already doing the right thing getting samples. Check the classifieds for deals on the forum and you can also post a wanted ad there. You may score a sweet deal from a member offloading their sets.

@ theoctagon

Do you think the Pharaohs will not wear well enough that I should consider the Majestic based on durability?

If any interest in ceramics... I have 2 casino cash sets available!
Let me know!

Get loads more samples. For your budget, you could get a used set of casino Paulsons so get some and see if you like them - the chip exchange has some. There are also some ex casino high end plastic chips from the chip vault so check those out too. Both are sellers here.

You could even get a custom set of ceramics - I don't think the scroll are a good representation for ceramics - they are very rough compared to most.

Actually, Apache has a mixed poker chip sample set - you'll get one of each of a lot of different type including bud jones, casino Paulson and the elite. Actually, there is a great set of like new clay PCF chips in the classifieds which will work well for tourneys and are great value for money.

As @TheOctagon said, I have a job lot of Outlaws and the're great for the price (14c/chip) and way below your budget. They do the job for me as my first chip set but they're the start, not the end!

Casino used Paulson. You’ll be glad you sprung for it. Horseshoe Cincinnati or Cleveland’s are good options in your price range.

I received a sample set of Majestics today and really liked them. I liked them so much I ordered 1000, enough for a cash game as well as a tournament. The cost was around $450 with 3 day air shipping.

In addition to all the other great advice here, you should check out the group buys page here at PCF.

There are two that I'm fairly certain are active now: Mountain Top and the Aria tribute. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong and they are closed)

These are 43mm Sunfly ceramics and look really good. I'm not sure of the exact prices per chip but assuming they're about 80¢ each you can have a 10-seat tourney set for around $250. Well within your $500 budget.

Denoms for 8,8,4,7 tourney:
80 x 25
80 x 100
40 x 500
80 x 1000
20 x 5000

Go with the Paulson or nice ceramics if your prefere those.

Otherwise you will buy China clays and then still end up buying Paulsons later like me....

That being said I think the majestic plaques from Apache are pretty sweet. The colors are bright and the people in my game love them.

This is the question I've been trying to answer myself for the last four years with no luck. The more I learn about all this the more I "gotta catch 'em all." I don't think there is one right answer for your first chips.

I agree with a lot of what has been said. Here is my quick summary (my opinion)
1) **Nice All Around Set** My ceramics (Tiki Kings) are my goto work horse chipset home/travel
2) **Nice Home Set** My Paulson obsolete Horseshoe Cincinnati chips are my exclusively at home set
3) **Beater Set** All other chips are travel, craps, other games, etc.

I needed three sets and it didn't matter what order I collected them. Now I have a base I can be picky and take my time looking through the classifieds. I expect everyone to have a different base and different tastes.

I like the majestic plaques but I have a few that are not flat (spinners) but every time I pull them out they are a huge hit - they never match the set we're playing with.

Hope that helps, thanks for watching, good luck.

I was deciding about those chips and went with Pharaohs china clay. I like their design more than the others.
I found the chip quality much lower than the Paulson Pharaoh. If you do go with the china clay chips, buy more. Your second chip purchase may have chips with different shade of colors.

Check out the Group Buy section of the forum but you're getting into the 85c to $1 per chip territory. Every now n then a group buy for Hybrid Ceramics come up and they seem to be a pretty good value, but I have only handled the 43mm (oversized chips). Not the 39mm.

If you subscribe to the classifieds section you can occasionally find a good deal on a set.

The Tiki King's are solid if you have any interest in a ceramic. Short of getting casino used Paulsons (as already suggested), from a budget perspective, I actually don't mind the Casino Royale chips - they are fairly cheap, but have all denominations you'd need (and they have plaques as well).

If you go high-end (many people eventually do here, even if kicking and screaming), a sensible choice would be an off-the-shelf (instead of custom) CPC set.
Or a home-used custom CPC set (enormous difference from casino-used chips).
It's the only company left to sell new high-end clay chips to the general public. Get color and mold samples to see if it would be meaningful for you to double your budget. Search the classifieds.
You don't have to go high-end of course.
It's the ever-lasting discussion when new members arrive asking about Fords and Chevvies and are told to seriously think about the evils of life without a used Ferrari.
I just recommended a no-option Porsche.
But the true pleasure comes from sharing an activity with people, be it a road trip or a poker game.
