I can rest fairly comfortably right now, between the epidural pain meds, and occasional oxy pill. Moving can be excruciating, like when they make me flip from side to side every few hours. I get occasional leg spasms that suck balls. They just gave me some muscle relaxants that will help with that.

They took me for an an MRI and CAT scan at about 3:00 overnight. One of the surgical team was here early this morning. Said the scans look great. I'll be leaving the ICU today. I can start working with PT any time I'm ready, because my back is now titanium, so everything is stable.

I don't know if better news is possible!

So are you now officially Steve Austin the Six Million Dollar Man?
I suppose. Glad my wife’s employer provides good insurance, so I don’t have to worry about the total.

Just saw the chief surgeon’s #2. He’s very pleased with the results. Since the tumor basically filled T8 and T9, they fused T7-T10 with a rod on each side. They believe the tumor to be benign, as expected. Leg strength is good, and I should expect a good outcome.

Okay, you win. This news is even better.

Man, I’ve been so scared these past few days. Nightmares hoping you’d be okay. I’m so glad you made a speedy recovery. Do you know how hard it is to sleep when all you are thinking about is, “damn, if Andrew doesn’t pull through, I’ll now be the biggest fish on 875, and maybe all of PCF!” :ROFLMAO:

Funny true story: I started a text thread with @BamaT8ter, @shorticus, and some other of my poker friends to keep them updated on the situation. One of them made a joke about them fixing my vagina while they had me on the table.

When I first woke up, one of the things I said in my drug -induced stupor was “and the doctor said my vagina will make a full recovery!”

 :ROFLMAO:
Andrew, glad things came out well for you and you still have your sense of humor!

Holy shit! I was right; get in, get out, and get well. I suppose those surgeons have tee times or maybe poker games to get ready for…

On the mend!

Well done sir.

Mrs. Beakertwang,

I see you are referring to your husband using female pronouns... Was there an additional surgery done?
I have a hard time imagining myself in a similar situation and instructing Mrs. Moxie upon awakening to be sure to inform my internet friends that I didn't die.
It may be the drugs, but she may have gotten it wrong. . She is not a poker player. :D
Glad you made it through with a good prognosis. I had a few queued up, but I'll leave you with this:

Not sure if this is a dog at me for busting Beakertwang's vagina after a very serious surgery, but if it was intended to be, I've exchanged several PMs with Andrew since Friday and he knows it was just an attempt to bring levity to the situation and a smile to his face.

Don't overthink it Eric. Nothing I say on PCF should ever be taken seriously :wtf:

If you can't bust a friend's vagina after surgery, what fun is life?

Damn, being away on a ship for the past few weeks, I missed all this until today. Glad to hear you had an optimum result, Andrew. Yes, it's amazing what docs can fix these days.

But as someone else advised earlier, put everything you can into the post-op PT. That's where you cash in on the operation.

Oh, and your initial post should be words on the wall to live and love by for all of us...nicely put.

So yeah there will be lots of fun had here

Andrew,

Glad to hear things are going in the right direction now comes the part that your determination and commitment will garner the results you need for the future.

The little things make up the whole effort and I wish you great success in your rehab.

All my Best Jeff :)

Great to hear the surgery went well, now the fun begins with PT. Just remember, don't punch the therapist in the face no matter how much you want to, there are there to help (painfully sometimes but help), pain is gain.

While I have had no urge to punch anyone, a very nice lady helping me move from the bed to the chair confirmed that my grip strength is good. :)

Day 4 post surgery update:

I can confirm that this is going to be a long difficult process. I’m out of the woods, but at the foot of a rather large mountain.

The excruciating pain of any movement has decreased from “AAARRRGH” to “eesh”. I can reach and grab my drinks and snacks, flip my pillow, and adjust myself in the bed slightly. I still need assistance to roll over, but pain is minimal. The pain has also changed from being general back pain, to being focused on the incision area.

My left leg is much stronger than my right. I could feel touch and wiggle my toes on both sides, but I’m just now able to lift my right leg a few inches off the bed.

I’ve been out of bed twice for short periods. I was transferred to the chair got a couple hours with the help of two wonderful PT’s. It has to be such a fulfilling, but often heartbreaking, career.

As soon as they can remove my epidural and hemovac, I’ll be ready for transfer to an inpatient acute rehab center. I’ll be there for probably two weeks, working regularly with PTs and OTs. There happens to be a facility at my local hospital. Here’s hoping they have an open bed.

Every sign of progress gives me hope. Thank you all for the support and encouragement!
