As quite a few people have asked recently (Tom, I got your voicemail but was out all day yesterday) this is an update on what we plan to try....

The master die and cups for this mold were originally designed to make slightly thicker chips than our others.
A lot of the problems that occurred in the past with the mold were as a result of trying to get the chips down to a regular thickness, even by attempting to use the mold itself to produce the slugs and then using the larger 1 inch inlay.
That method is not a viable option, and neither would be machining the cups in any way. The outer 'ring' in the mold design is engraved particularly deep, and thinning the chips just leads to excessive breakage when trying to remove them from the mold.

So, we are going to attempt to make some chips using the one 7/8 inch slug mold that exists (the one we use for the 44mm scroll) and then press them as normal. This will almost certainly result in chips that are 19-19.5 in a barrel.
If it works then that will be the option - 7/8 inlay only and fractionally thicker chips.

Until we've done this we have no idea of wastage or other complications so can't estimate any prices.

As we can only do this when we are both 'tooled up' for 44mm and are not needing to use the 44mm scroll mold, we plan to try this out immediately after the 44mm scroll is next in use (August/September). If it works then the mold would go into the production cycle based on demand.

On the 44mm scroll mold - as I mention it will be in use in a few months as we have some committed orders. Demand is low though so we'd like a few more orders :)
Anyone wanting 44mm Rounders we should (within reason) be able to waive the minimum order requirements if you are sticking to the standard colors. Any orders would have to be confirmed and paid by end of May but an early indication would be very helpful.

I look forward to the test output.

My next custom set will likely involve 44mm if it's available...

We are talking about the 44mm A mold here. Nothing wrong with the 44 scroll.

Remember we don't even know if this will work at all yet, its just a relatively low cost way of finding out.

@David Spragg,
I am planning on ordering my chips this week, I was going to go with CSQ and 44mm Scroll, but if the 44mm A is a possibility I would want all of my chips on the A mold..

I am am kind of inclined to wait on my order to see if the A mold works, but my 44mm Scroll mold order would have been part of your next run, would this affect you at all?

Should I put my order in now as A-mold with my 100+ piece 44mm A mold?

If the A mold does not work, I would want to do CSQ and 44mm Scroll, what can we do?

Thank you

Just want to say thanks to @David Spragg for being continuously willing to go the extra mile in response to customer requests. It could not instill more confidence and satisfaction that the money paid for these beautiful chips is going to people who care about producing quality goods and making as many as possible of the dreams of the custom chipping community come true.

We will not know if the mold works until September at least. If it does, the first production run probably won't be until 2017.
We wont know what the prices will be. They could well be a lot more expensive than the 44mm scroll.
I'm not prepared to take any orders on something that may well not work. Also, any order that mixes 39mm and 44mm together has to be treated as two separate orders and will be made at different times. Could be months apart. Each must meet the minimum order requirements. Same as it has always been and same as 44mm scroll.
We would not even contemplate using the mold (if it works) unless there are sufficient orders to justify it.
So there are a lot of if's and but's. If you decide to wait you might not get your chips for 18 months either way.

Some pictures of the tools and the process would be great for some of us illiterate in chip manufactoring.

I have a custom set on the 44 mm A mold from the ASM days, will definitively consider expanding it is it becomes available

Unfortunately licensing restrictions prevent us from providing that. In any case most of the process has always been a closely guarded secret to avoid anyone being able to duplicate, and this has worked.

YES!

I don't need 44mm A-Mold but with it, my set will be complete and I can sleep through the whole night again! I don't need it, but I must have it. Badly.

Edit: If successful, have you considered making some Chinese manufacturer make slightly bigger 44mm trays and sell those too? I'm guessing it's too much hassle compared to the profits...

The first 10,000 trays cost about $8 each. I doubt we would ever sell 100 let alone 10,000! (that's the minimum)

44mm rounders tourney set?! :sneaky:(y)

So nice! I'd be in for a 44mm A-Mold set using these shallower spots.

Reminder that anyone needing 44mm scroll chips (Rounders or otherwise) on the next run later this year let me know asap.

I like the shallow edge spots on the 44mm. The longer edge spots just look too big IMO

Back when the spot punches were made, the only oversize mold in existence was the scroll, owned then by John Huxley & Co, restricted to casino use only.
The punches were thus made for Huxley or their casino customers, to their specs. Why they wanted them deep like that I don't know, but that explains why they are like they are.

A little bit of history. Cool.
