Curious on what people consider a good win rate.

I just spent four nights playing poker at two different card rooms.

Ended up 5 buyins at $1/$2.

First session
5 hours +2.5 buy ins

Second session
4 hours -1 buy in

Third session
12 hours +2.5 buy ins

Fourth session
6 hours +1 buy in

27 total hours.

I’m very happy with how I played, but know that I left some money on the table. A bit too passive at times, a bit too stubborn at others.

How much do you expect to win when you play?

My expectations for casino 1/2NL are very different from my expectations for my weekly .25/.50NL home game. And my expectations for casino 1/2NL vary significantly depending on the venue and the rake.

For example, I rarely play at my local room these days because the rake on 1/2NL is 6+2, and too many players buy in short ($100 in a $200 max game). I don't consider the game to be long-term beatable.

In an average 1/2 game where the rake isn't that bad and most players are buying in for 100bb, I personally wouldn't expect more than 10-20bb/hr long-term, and I'd be pretty happy with it. YMMV.

Beating 1/2 with a capped buy in of $200-300 is very difficult based on the rake. Even if you are really good at exploiting the players, I can't imagine you can win more than $20-25 at $6 rake. Simple reason is that at a $6 cap around $120-160 is coming off the table every hour. Basically, a player is busting to rake every hour.

When the buy in is uncapped, you can do much better as you can win much larger amounts in any given hand, whether bluffing or value.

To get a decent idea of win rate though, you need to play upwards of 1000hrs live. And even then, that's not a big sample.

My win rate at 1000hrs of 1/2 with avg buy in around 300 is in that range I mentioned earlier. And that rake varies from $5-$10. At the 1/3 uncapped $10 rock game, my win rate is considerably higher. Even with the $12 rake. But again, it's still small sample size. And I could easily be just experiencing good overall variance.

Given my history at a casino, I expect to win in poker 100% of the time.

Given my history at a casino, I expect to lose everything I won in poker at roulette 100% of the time.
