With the design phase of my Pier Five chips finished up, and with all the excitement surround the Teddy KGB chips that were posted here this afternoon, I figured I'd revisit my mock-up of the Jake KGB chips that I was toying around with last month (see this thread for background). Long story short,, I bought a set of (almost) 500 hot-stamped spotted LCV chips on eBay about 6 weeks ago. My original plan was to (mill and) relabel them for use in my Aruba Palm Beach set. However, after giving it some thought, I decided to make a playable set out of the set. The theme I'm working on is a knockoff of the KGB Rounders chips, paying tribute to Jake, our family's black lab; I feel like the simple, single color spots on each chip work well with that theme.

So I mocked these up this evening and was curious for any opinions and/or ideas. I have about 150 of each chip, except the yellow (only 50). My plan would be to use this as a smaller, supplemental cash set that could accommodate a small 0.25/0.50 game, or possible 1/2. So with that in mind, the red seemed like the obvious choice for the $5 chip. I've never had a set with a $20 chip, so I was thinking the yellow could be a $20 chip. I'm slightly torn on the white and blue. I mocked them up with the white as the quarter, mostly because the edge spots progress better that way. Any opinions on this would be appreciated.

Also, any thoughts on the denomination color? I could go all red (or all black), but I was wondering if anyone liked the color matched denominations in the second picture. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet, so I figured I'd post it and solicit some opinions.

I'd either go all red or color-matched for the denom. (All black would be boring and terrible.) Red is more like actual Rounders, color-matched works well on the Empress chips, which are also quite simple in design.

BTW jealous of these chips!

Definitely all red. The white quarter and the blue $1 fit the Rounders edge spot progression for sure.

SHIP IT!

Thanks guys. This confirms my thoughts as well as I prefer the all-red denominations. Before I actually mocked up the color matched denominations, I thought it might work well. But once I put the virtual inlays on the pictures I took of the chips, I realized it didn't work quite as well as it did in my head. I don't think it looks bad, but I agree the red works better. As @Gear said, black is a bit boring and didn't look as nice, which is why I didn't even bother to upload that image with the other two.

Ok, next question. I have some spotted starbursts on the way. I believe one of the chips is going to be a close match to the yellow chip in this set (I think the difference in spot color is due to lighting, but I'm not sure). Let's assume they are the same for now, because if there's not, the rest of this is moot. The two differences are going to be SCV vs LCV (not a huge deal I suppose) and the fact that one is a 312 pattern vs a 412 pattern (obviously a much larger difference).

Despite that, I was considering using them (there are 50) to increase the bank of this set. How do you think they would looked mixed together? Obviously I can better answer this question when they arrive and I can post pictures of a mixed stack, but just thought I'd solicit some thoughts ahead of time as to whether this is a silly idea or not.

If the color matches, use'em. Even if it's close, you might still use them. Secondaries in play! :D

The Empress set has eight iterations of every denom - primary/secondary, SCV/LCV, and light/dark base colors. Some people can't tell the difference between the colors, particularly when chips are oiled. Others, like the $5s, are fairly easily discernable even after oiling. Doesn't matter, though - all chips play w/one another and it hasn't tilted anyone here, least of all me (which is weird, given my normal tendencies).

Ok, quick update. Found some matching LCV 312 hotstamps (86 of them) on eBay that I thought might go well with this theme/set. Not 100% sure what to do with them yet, but I was considering using them as quarters instead of the white chips that I already have. Was never crazy about that particular chip in this set (smaller spots, no contrast with inlay background, white isn't my favorite chip color, etc).

Anyway, let me know what you think of the lineup below and/or if you have any other suggestions on what I might do with the new chips in the context of this set. As it stands below, the set would end up being 400 chips total with a break down of 80 x $0.25, 140 x $1, 140 x $5 and 40 x $20 (plus spares).

Sweet! Now I'm glad I didn't have the opportunity to buy those AM $5 hotstamps before you, because that set is where they belong.

Thanks! Couldn't pass up a nice condition 312 LCV hotstamps in a unqiure color to add to this set ;)

I can't tell you how many times in a ten minute span I clicked on the white/blue ones and almost bought them too. Glad you ultimately grabbed them, they're really nice looking chips. If I didn't think it would be an issue (in terms of color conflict) with the above $1 chips, I would have snapped them too.
