Oiling real clay poker chips (2 Viewers)

Reading up on oiling clay poker chips. Is this a necessary step to ensure longevity and or performance of the chips or more for aesthetic reasons? Any issues with chips sticking together or anything like that in your experience?
 
Thank you for the advice. I have some CPC sample sets that are quite chalky and rough. Just didn’t want to ruin anything!
 
FWIW, at center here is a barrel of CPCs (HHR mold with brass) lightly treated with the oil-water method, compared against two dry barrels:

I did not rub these down (but I might). Just dried them off lightly and let them sit out for about 20 minutes on a side.
