I built my table over 10 years ago and I am changing out the layout. The old padding could use a change too. I don’t remember what padding I currently have on it. When I search google, Volara 1/4 padding is coming up. Has anyone used it? If so, thoughts?

That seems to be the standard for home builds. It's what I used when I built a few 20 years ago. I also used 1/2 inch neoprene on one table, loved the way it felt/ played. Still have that table, but, it's ready for a new cover.

Yup. 1/4" volara. Get it from YAT. Don't scrimp on the materials... My Fat Tire table is going strong with regular play over 11 years.

I just ordered an 8 foot roll from casino supply. The kind they have is different than the auto stuff previously mentioned. I don’t know if it’s different but mine was a dark color 1/4.

My latest savage build is a conference table with a 1/5 plywood “oval”. (I cut it with a sawl zawl like a beast, not perfect, looks like shit but you can’t really tell because the rail covers the imperfection. Slightly.

I screwed the plywood into the conference table using many screws.

I came up short on the arm rail. Originally measured just the table before the plywood add-on.

Who needs a felt?? We live and we die ON THE FOAM!!

Um. Thats prob not closed cell foam, which means it will absorb liquids. Also the durability of the foam surface will not stand up to time. I’ve used open cell foam on a few projects, but it was limited and I knew it wouldn’t see much use. Also, you’ll want to glue down the foam with light spray glue. Most folks dont staple the foam.

You can get suited speed cloth, 3 yards, for 85 bucks and it will last many years of protecting your foam. the good stuff has some water repellency to it. You can find cheap Chinese made eBay cloths for $30, but splurge and get the USA made speed cloths. Do it do once. Do it right

As for cuts, future table builders PLEASE make your arcs with a router and circle jig. Thats how it's done (unless you have a CNC machine). I use a router for my straight cuts as well, but you can use a circular saw with a edge guide to make sure your cuts are straight. Please do not use a jigsaw or a sawzall.

Selection of playing surface largely comes down to preference, I would recommend reading through this:

Post in thread 'Poker Table Question' https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/poker-table-question.30485/post-561441

Personally I only put volara on tables specifically when someone asks for it, and I always caveat that with several warnings that it will likely come creased. YAT stopped selling it at one point purely because it was so difficult to ship without damage.

I used volara on my original builds and high density foam on my COVID builds.

The high density foam is vastly superior to volara from a play standpoint that I switched it out on my original builds.

If water resistant is your primary concern, get valora. If not, I HIGHLY recommend high density foam.

Can you please describe more in detail what the high density foam makes so superior.

High-density foam is softer and has more give, making it much easier to pick up cards. It is also more forgiving regarding dents caused by elbows or heavy objects (like cash boxes or chip cases). Dents in volara usually become permanent.

I wish I woulda asked around for the better table padding tbh. I got this along with the railing so it was easier to ship. I bought the same “Volara foam” from casino supply years ago and I swear it was different than this last roll I got. It was more of a rubbery, high quality foam and this stuff is more like a dense pool noodle type padding.

It’s still good enough to where you only hear the chips when you toss them on the table. You can’t hear that wood sound.

And don’t worry fellas I was just kidding about playing on the foam alone. I got the goods on it.

Mainly what BG said.

For me, it's just much nicer to play on a softer and more forgiving playing surface.

Valora is like playing on concrete compared to HD foam, and if my drunk ass leaves a couple racks of chips on it overnight, I don't have a permanent rectangle indent in my foam.

HD foam - 10/10, would recommend.

I love the advice here thus far, and am glad you have a cloth…. Wheh!

I like the volara, but would give serious thought to the HD foam recommended here by others. I really like neoprene too, as I have a neoprene topper that gets rave reviews from my wife and our friends when we host “drunk” cards (that don’t rate time at my “poker table”).

Neoprene is great, if you can find it in the right LxW
