Not Mine “Ultimate” poker chip set at Costco (1 Viewer)

When I ran that search, the first items returned were the poker chip cases made/sold by George & Company, LLC.

I guess search results vary based on search history plus other Amazon black magic.

Those are BJs, telltale signs are the lack of inner-ring, small square spots, and particular inner-ring design. I think you can request weighted or unweighted with BJs, BGs, and Gemacos from GPI, but I wouldn't know.

Nah they aren't I've played at Playground poker too and had another discussion with a member on this forum about these chips, they only have the design of BJs but they're not actually Bud Jones, the feel is nothing like them and the red numbers and edge pattern are a separate part of the chip

Since I’ve never felt these particular chips I can’t argue my point. I will say though, that the inner-ring and edge pattern not being part of the chip is actually a sign that they are plastics, unless you mean that they were printed on, but I haven’t heard of 13.5 gram ceramics.
 
I have 4 of the Versa 500 chip cases. They feel as solid as can be.

50 for a 400 case + some chips I can just give to a friend instead of them trying to borrow my THCs all the time certainly has some merit.

I kinda doubt they would be Bud Jones, too. 13g sounds much too weighty for a BJ 39mm weighted chip. Unweighted S2s are about 8g, so I would expect even weighted ones to be only around 10g. The Abbiati chips in the Crown Plaza GB were 11.5g (weighted).

True, but I've had 14g 39mm BGs, so...

Either way, @mtl mile end has graciously decided to send me a few to sample, so there should be a final answer soon.

Nah not printed on, they are definitely plastics but some sort of hybrid, its a mystery where they are actually from but I am confident they are not bud jones, this is how they look like when they came apart

Oh interesting, I noticed a specific feel on these where you can tell its two parts but not on any other BJ chip, you probably know better then me though, once you feel them Id love to get a conclusive opinion
 
On the surface, this is a serious derail, but I think it pertains to OP in that the pictured chips are still a complete mystery to all of us and may well be exactly the same as a real cardroom's chips. Fat chance on that one, but not because the Playground chips don't seem crappy.

I had assumed these were Bud Jones when Playground opened in 2010. They did seem a little heavy though. Eventually, I checked some at home and they were 13g and slugged. I wrote them off at that point. Then I read that ChipGuide called them BJ, so now I'm confused.

And looking at the guts of this^ chip, I'm hoping whoever is the first to get the Costco set immediately smashes one open so we can see inside. In fact, I wish anyone who owns this kind of vinyl style chip were to smash one open right now and post a pic. :watching:
 
Any time you have multiple colors in an injection-molded chip, the chip is going to be constructed like you see above. Each color is a solid piece, and the "base" color is essentially molded around the "insert" colors.

This is true for both low-end chips (cheap Chinese slugged plastic) and high-end chips (Bud Jones, Matsui, B&G, Abbiati, etc).

I've noticed that kind of effect on Matsui decal chips in which you can tell the two parts, but on BJs it would be a rare anomaly. Definitely looking forward to seeing how severe that effect is.

Here are some cases that look exactly like Versa cases, but are sold by/through a different brand:

These are available in 200, 300, 400, and 500 sizes. Note the 400 size, which Versa seems not to offer - it's the same size which is now available from Costco in the OP's package.

These cases all look so much alike that one has to imagine that they are all produced by the same manufacturer. Versa may have simply been the first company to import and sell them under their own brand, but they probably no longer have an exclusive, if they ever did.
 
One thing I can guarantee Costco would never buy old versus cases they would just have them produce more. They would contract HUGE numbers and simply require their own model that would ALWAYS be different then the normal in some way and cheaper. Yes they always expect them to be a notch above above other models and prices cheaper retail/manufacturing. Even on something as simple as a plastic bin or vacuum. The ones at Costco would be THICKER then the copies elsewhere or have MORE options and be the same price to make or less. I have sat in corporate rooms inside Priceclub/SamsClub/Costco. In my experience they do not buy old product EVER They would require a manufacture To produce new and generally HIGHER or specific standard then normal again for less if possible.. Basically They always want a leg up and A deal. It is not the same product that’s 100% for sure. It NEVER is. Is itt made by the same company? Well in this case I’d bet my money on YES based off looks alone and my dealings with them in the past. Time will tell. Great thread! Can’t wait to hear more....

Agreed. This has been the Costco mantra for all their Kirkland Signature items. Above accepted industry standard.

Wow this is fascinating, does anyone own these cases? I like how theres walls for the chip dividers, I might actually prefer that to the versa cases as some of the newer models the chips are touching and you really have to squeeze them in there to make them fit.

if these were made by versa U can rest assured Costco thinks they are much better (then standard) and Costco got them cheaper.
