Hi all!

I am looking at a chip set which has a very pretty 10k chip. Unfortunately, my instincts tell me this chip isn't very useful in tournaments, since it seems people get 5k chips and the next chip is probably 25k? But OTOH, I am also curious because it seems both 500 and 1k chips are used (despite 500 x 2 = 1k).

Any thoughts appreciated.

Forgot to say, I am interested probably in T25, but I am curious if T100, for instance, would use 10k chips.

No it's generally not very useful, but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants...

It would be useful if instead of 1k and 5k chips you used a 2k (or even 2.5k) chip. The T25 vs. T100 aspect doesn't matter at all.

I used to play in a T30k tournament that used T10ks and it seemed to work pretty well.
Starting stack was:

1 x T10k
2 x T5k
8 x T1k
2 x T500
8 x T100
8 x T25

This worked well for a 6-12 table MTT. It might not be a perfect starting stack for PCFers who tend to want more chips in their starting stack. But if you’re looking for efficiency, that worked great.

For a 1 or 2 table tournament, it’s probably just as easy to use all T5s - I’m not saying everybody needs a T10k, but they can be useful.

I have a ceramic set that came with 5k and 10k chips. The 10k chips are soooo much nicer than the 5k chips, but I will not use them. I mean, maybe if I run out of 5k chips

I was in a similar boat for a different reason, I got a ‘free’ 500 chipset as part of a Black Friday deal, and since I have 2 cash sets thought I could make an easy tournie set.

I’d recommend searching for ‘tournament denomination’ posts by @BGinGA, there’s a bunch of recommendations.

I ended up asking for the below quantity x denomination, going for way more 1000’s and fewer 10ks (total 500 chips). I’m not an expert on this, but the below was my best effort after spending 10-15mins looking at different options (prob way too many 1000 but was trying to compensate for no $5k denom):

100x $25
100x $100
80x $500
180x $1000
40x $10,000
