I've recently become addicted to the Fire TV Stik, with 2 in my home and 1 in the studio for poker nights. If you're on the fence, I strongly recommend picking up the new 4k unit. WiFi reception is greatly improved, and the interface is buttery smooth. And if you still have a Cable TV subscription, you can login to many of your premium channels, so you rarely have to swap inputs and go back to your cable box.

It looks like there's a $10 OFF deal running right now, which makes it a good time to buy!

Can you tell I'm a big fan of Fire Stik? :p

BUT!

They usually run specials like that to move inventory before releasing a new version.

I was wondering about that! But wasn't the 4k just released for the 2018 Xmas season? I don't think it's even 6 months old yet.

But you're right... Amazon could be up to their usual product-update chicanery. :/

so, I pay for cable(Fios).. -- I mean, I already pay for internet and phone, so the TV part wasn't that much more.

what does the fire stick give me that cable cannot? What does cable get me that Fire Stick can't?

FWIW, I looked into cutting the cord, but once you add a few streaming services to get what you need, you are almost back to the price of adding TV to the ISP
Just curious.

A hacked Firestick can give you a world of options that you don't get with cable...

But even out of the box, you can access content on TVs that don't have a cable box... If you have a streaming service (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime) you can get all that on your TV too.

Poker in the basement but don't want to deal with moving all the cords for one night? Move the TV, hook up the Firestick. Viola! Going on vacation at a hotel? Camping? Out of the country?

For me it's mainly getting content where I typically CAN'T.

I don't have a cable connection in my photo studio - just WiFi - but Fire TV let's me stream pretty much anything I want during poker games. And with the $5.99 CBS Sports subscription, I can slap up almost any major sporting event that I want.

And my house is rather old, with no cable wiring in the 2 bedrooms. The Fire Stik allows me to have a good selection of content in both of those rooms for me and the wife, and guests in the spare room. Add in the fact that I have a Plex server with a ton of movies, and I can stream that stuff to any Fire Stik, anywhere.

Personally, I don't see Fire TV as a cord cutting venture... it is more of as an extension to my cable plan... which just allows you to push/receive content where you need it. And if you're already paying for an Amazon Prime account... why not drop the $40 on a Fire Stik to get access to all of that streaming content?

Poker BBQ 2018... no cable... streaming/projecting NHL playoffs...

got it. Thanks for that detail.

Do you get the free Pluto TV ch? I get it on the Roku. They have the WPT channel. 24-7 poker.

Yeah, between Pluto TV and PokerGo I get all the poker content I could ever want, and I’m a Roku fan over the others simply because it’s the only unbiased option out of the bunch (ie Google, Amazon and Apple....)

Plus you get Buzzr on Pluto tv (which I also get over the air, but still can’t beat that) ;)

Amazon also has a DVR device you can attach to HD antennae and the. Rebroadcast free HD channels around your house and over the internet. I cut the cord years ago so I am getting this to send tv to my basement and to a beach condo in DE that doesn’t receive any HD signals.

And hooked up to my new 65” LG OLED, it’s amazeballs!!! ;)

I have an old-as-hell TV. Does that "4k" have anything to do with the TV quality? Or can I use this on my old as hell TV?

The '4k' moniker is really just marketing lingo, and has more to do with its improved WiFi speeds, which provides better bandwidth to support 4k streaming. But it significantly reduces buffering on the majority of other content as well. Everything just seems "fast" and "snappy."

As long as your TV has an HDMI input, it will work!

BONUS... the new Fire TV remote has a built-in IR emitter and auto-pairs with your TV/projector/whatever during setup to control power and volume as well, so you only need the one remote. So far it's correctly paired with my Panasonic flat screen, and the projector at the studio... it's pretty slick!

It will "dumb it down" to whatever resolution your TV can display, so as long as it has HDMI ports, and is some sort of LCD/LED/Plasma/flatscreen you should be ok..... :)
You're just missing out on the 4k goodness, but fear not, there was an 88" 8K OLED on display at the CES this year, so you can just skip 4K and go full on 8K next!

4k just has to do with it's upgraded WiFi, which provides better download speeds to support the new 4k streaming.

4K is resolution, not Wifi speeds..... but I'm sure they upgraded the Wifi to 802.11ac or similar to support the 4k streams.... :)

I know. I'm just rehashing the main review points out there. Apparently they made significant upgrades to the on-board WiFi.

This is noticeable on other content as well... buffering is notably reduced, and the entire experience is what I would simply describe as "fast."

Just ordered this yesterday.
I have a 50" in the basement poker room but no cable box. I'm currently having to bring one of my upstairs boxes downstairs when I have a weekly game.

I have Netflix and Amazon, plus a maxed out cable subscription. So my goal is to be able to watch sports or whatever and be done with moving that cable box.

Was really hoping to find some poker sources. Sounds like that WPT channel is free?

I also have Kodi with a subscription to get better streams. I'm sure I'm only using like 1% of what that's capable of. Anyone know a good app to get poker and sports on Kodi?
