And people think we're crazy...... (1 Viewer)

Wow. I watched the whole thing hoping to see one of our Meatup members pop in to the screen and out them as a fraud

Hobbies look weird to people that aren't into them. Only a few of my poker buddies know how much I've spent on my stuff and they just don't get it. I routinely tell one of them I think it's absurd that he spends so much on top of the line hunting and fishing gear. An another buddy is into bowling - I never knew you could spend so much on bowling balls and other gear. Most of the guys in my group golf so they get my obsession with that stuff.

I guess we're all a bit weird in our own way :)

My father in law collects snow mobiles. I believe he has close to 70 unique models. It's pretty neat to see his huge garage but....snow mobiles??? Wtf? Makes chip collecting look the norm.

Classic.

I was initially convinced the "Never Been Thawed" clip was an SNL skit.

It's a great mockumentary. I remember going to see it at a film festival in Chicago many years ago. I saw another one at the same fest, and I can't remember the title, but it was a doc about a Kiss cover band that was also pretty good.

Wtf, over. Yeah, I'm fully aware we are only a 4 on the crazy collector scale, but washing machines? I think you can classify collections on a crazy scale that is a function of space required and obscurity . This one is high on space required and high on obscurity, so that puts it right at about an 8. Anything past an eight requires creepiness added to the mix and at least this one isn't that creepy.

That is crazy. Also surprised they are all dudes that are in that club.

I'd heard of the Dudes Laundry Club before, but didn't realize they were washing machine collectors.

Some of those old washers looked pretty cool, though I'm not sure I could keep a straight face at that meetup.

I wonder if they just use generic run-of-the-mill dryers, or if they geek out on those too. Or if that is a different club entirely.

can't believe i watched the whole thing...thinking maybe it is real

remember a guy that collected old flour bags and i thought that was the weirdest thing ever

I was obsessed with washing laundry in college. They had a laundry room called Suds and Duds. Wash a load and drink a pitcher.

They got a machine that won't damage chips? That I could get into.

Although it was hysterical, I saw a lot of parallels with our meet-ups. Dragging your dirty laundry to some dude's basement might seem a bit creepy to some, but these guys definitely fall into the "I bought mint chips to use them, not look at them" side of collecting. And they realize there is no cure for the affliction. More power to 'em. I might change my username to BlazeOrangeGuy. :)

@BGinGA is right though.

This is definitely a meetup hobby where you actually USE your collectibles. We don't just buy them to stare at them.

Also remember guys...

....just like everybody here has their own preferences, whether it be cash sets, tourney sets, casino sets, vintage sets, customs, Paulsons, TRKs, BCCs, ASM/CPCs, china clays, faux-clays, inlays, hot-stamps, etc. Or all of the above. :D

I think when you include that fact that it's grown men who want to be with other grown men who all bring their dirty laundry, and you've ticked the creepy box.

Ha, finally watched this. Too funny, and for sure, I see the parallels to our meetups. I'd fathom that poker is more mainstream, but the collecting of poker chips (to the degree we see here) is pretty far down the "geeky" rabbit hole.

I mean, we have threads upon threads on how to wash/oil chips. I can only imagine their conversations on which detergents to use...

Ahh. Admittedly, I didn't get that far into it. Yeah, that's creepy. I'll go ahead and peg that one at 9.5.
