Hey everyone,

Another new guy checking in here from NC. Been lurking on the site for the last month or so and finally decided to register. Been a long time home game player, used to play fairly regularly but fell off over the last several years. I've recently started playing again and hosting some home games. Mostly tourney's for now but may do some cash games in the future based on interest. Right now I'm using those wonderful slugged, dice chips! Have a set of about 1400 of them that I put together throughout high school and college.

Looking to move up in the world of chips with something middle of the line that at least wouldn't get me laughed out of the room by any serious chip guys. Right now I'm considering Majestics and Milanos and have samples ordered. I'm also semi considering and like the look of the Veneratis but not sure I really want ceramic chips.

I've never touched a real casino or clay chip before so I'm thinking I will probably be pretty impressed by the China Clays. I really like the look of the Majestics.

Will probably try to put together a 600 chip set to start. Off the top of my head I'm thinking:
200 x $25
200 x $100
140 x $500
60 x $1000

Figured with that breakdown I could easily do T5000 or T10000 tourneys with 8-12 guys and could also do cash games using $25s as $.25s, $100s as $1s, $500s as $5s, and $1000s as $10s.

Any thoughts on this or other chips I should consider? Looking to stay under $300 or so but am willing to go up slightly more if necessary.

Thanks.

Welcome to PCF! Samples are important so it looks like you are off to a good start.
I'd pick up a sample of ceramics too. OWPS and ABC both carry a sample set variety pack.
Let us know what you end up getting.

Welcome to the forum!!!! Lots of great people here, and great information.

Majestics are nice but depending on your budget you may want to look at CPC chips and do some customs. Then you can have the fun in designing your own chips, spots and colors!!! You will also get great service and a great product from David Spragg

Welcome and hold on to your wallet tightly until you find what you want

Thanks.

Welcome. You will get plenty of info on this site.

Pick up a barrel of 5k chips with that 600 chip set that you are going to get.....this will give you some rebuys chips to use in a T5000 tourney (y)

Just out of curiosity how much do the custom chips run?

Go to the classic poker chips site. They have a per chip cost for each level of chip. You will have a wait, some longer than others depending on what mold you go with. They start at .85¢ per chip for plain mold and go up to over $3 per chip depending on mold and spot chosen. Great chips and your design!!!

Samples samples samples samples. That being said, welcome to pcf!

Thanks for all the welcomes guys! Glad to be here.

Checked out the CPCs and they look awesome but I just can't swing those prices. I have samples ordered for the Milanos, Majestics, Veneratis, Desert Palms, and Nevada Jack Skulls.

I really think I will end up liking one of the china clay samples I ordered. The more I've been reading I kind of want both a cash and a tourney set, and at china clay prices I could do both.

If I did 1000 chips total how does this breakdown look:

Cash:
160 x $.25
140 x $1
100 x $5

Tourney:
200 x $25
200 x $100
160 x $500
40 x $1000

How many players do you host for your tournaments? And what cash game stakes do you play? Buyins?

The most I've had so far was 8, been doing T5000 but may bump that to T7500 or T10000 and keep the same blind structure starting at 25/50.

I've never played a cash game before but there are a few guys I know who are interested. I was thinking doing .25/.25 or .25/.50 stakes and I imagine starting out that buy-ins will be in the $20-50 range.

You will probably need more of the $5 for the cash games!
Good luck!

Welcome! [Assuming a lot of things] you probably don't need 200 T25s and T100s for an 8-player T5,000-T10,000 tourney set. You'd need 160 max, assuming 20 of each per player (which is a lot imo - 12 works just fine).

The $1 chip will likely [again, I'm assuming some things here] be the workhorse chip in the cash game so I would add a bunch more of those.

Oh, click the link in my signature, reply to that thread and I'll send you a free chip :)

China clays are a good starting chip, much better than dice chips, and all but the most snobbish chipper will find them acceptable. The Majestics can also be ordered as blanks, and you can have custom labels (by Palm Imports or Gear) made for them. Not as custom as a ClassicPokerChips chip, but about 1/3 the price.

Welcome to PCF, may your wallet be empty and your CHIP racks be full...

You came to the right place, lots of great people and advice...
As mentioned samples are very important......

Good luck with getting the right china clay's .....

BTW, most of us started with Dice, then went to CC, then into Used casino, then Customs, I am at the stage that I want a custom set now, and with all the money I spent on those I could have a nice large CPC custom, but it was a fun journey..

Thanks for all of the welcomes! Still patiently waiting for my samples to arrive. I did get the samples of Nevada Jack Skulls and Desert Palms. They are definitely nicer than my dice chips and I've enjoyed handling them but I don't love them. Honestly I only ordered them as a comparison for the Veneratis which are by far my favorite ceramic chips just looking at pictures. I hope they look as nice in person although I think I'm still leaning towards a set of china clays.

My order of Milanos and Majestics was supposed to be here Friday. The USPS tracking page still shows them scheduled for delivery yesterday and they are last showing scanned leaving Las Vegas Wednesday morning. Hopefully they're not lost and I will get them soon. I have also since ordered a sample the Pharaoh china clay from Apache as well. I didn't like them at all when I first started looking and now I think I may like them even better than the Majestics. We will see when I get them in hand.

I can see how this can become an expensive hobby! I need to get a set I really like and get away from you people :D

A quick way to get some CPC chips without paying the huge price for some is to try the Key West themed set which runs around 1.40 a chip. I have a 500 piece tourney set of these and they are absolutely wonderful.

I started out with getting Milanos last year. Got a 300 piece set and thought I was out.....

You can't get out.... You just... Can't.

I've something like 8,000 chips now and it's taken over my life.

I can't talk too loudly about this though... The chips might hear...

Welcome to PCF. My family goes to the beach down near Wilmington every year, nice to know there's a local Chipper!

Virtus, welcome aboard. I just joined myself a couple of weeks ago. You seem to be along the same line of thinking as myself. I just ordered over a dozen "STOCK" (not custom) sample sets from a variety of reputable distributors over the past few weeks, all either china clay or ceramics.

For china clay, I ordered samples of Majestics, Milanos, and Pharaoh Clubs (from Apache Poker Chips).

For ceramics, I ordered Scrolls, Niles, Laurel Crowns, Venerati's, NJ Skulls, NJ Saloons, NJ Desert Sands, Tiki Kings/Clubs, and ABC Wicked Spades.

I can't seem to get past the issue that china clays may contain some lead. I'm in the process of doing more research on this. But I have two young kids at home and there is just something that won't allow me to pull the trigger on these even though most here probably don't think this is an issue.

So because of that, I'm looking more closely at these ceramics. Right now, I've narrowed it down to the Venerati's, NJ Desert Sands, and the Tiki Kings. I've been staring at these 3 sets for over a week now and still can't decide. I need to buy 2 of the 3 (1 cash, 1 tourney).

Check out Hobbyphilic subscription on YouTube too... Great 20-30 minute reviews on almost every one of the stock chips I mentioned above (china clay and ceramic). These videos, plus your own samples, but this member feedback from this forum should help. It's helped me.
