I’ve been to several casinos lately and now that I pay attention to chips, I’ve noticed that many of the casinos have changed to plastic chips instead of Paulson clay. Even watching poker YouTube videos, I see that many of the Vegas casinos seem to going plastic also. I was at Harrah’s Reno and noticed all of the chips were hard plastic except for the singles which were strangely mixed with some (half of them) being plastic and other half being a beautiful Paulson hot stamp.

The hard plastic chips stay clean which is nice but they don’t grip well and I can’t tell you how many times I knocked over my chips. I watched the craps dealers continually knock chips over and when I commented how much I hated the plastic chips, the all chimed in how awful and slick they were. And they went on and on about it.

Are Paulson chips a thing of the past?

I really hope not, but as newer & younger Casino managers ( that know nothing about chips) are promoted into positions of authority & chip ordering & cost cutting ... a fear is that we will continue to see more slippery plastic and "official Weight" slugged chips in use ...

I think it will come down to game security and perceived value of the chip. "Clay" chips have a distinct feel and are hard to replicate.

When plastics with holograms and other security features come down to Paulson prices, then I think we will see a major shift. Better branding and security at the same price will beat tradition 9 times out of 10.

Are you telling m a bud jones plastic chip costs MORE than a Paulson clay chip?

I'm not talking about glittery text. I'm talking about full face animated holograms with rfid, micro printing and other advanced security features. Once that price is down to vanilla RHC, then we will see more of a shift.

It’s bad enough I have to play with ceramic chips everywhere. If I had to play with plastic at an actual casino, I’d have a tantrum. I get that bud jones plastic chips are better than the crap plastic chips you see at a typical underground game, but they’re still plastic. Takes the joy out of firing ten chips at the pot.
And to think they’re MORE expensive? I know they last forever, but that’s not always a sign of quality.

A lot of smaller/regional outfits use RT, BJ, or other lower-cost chips, but I don’t think the big casinos will stop using Paulson any time soon.

Non-casino Paulsons are probably not coming back, though it looks like the sun mold (and others) might be offered - if that counts.

Clay is more popular in the USA, plastics are more common in Europe. Not sure about Asia. Hopefully the trend will continue. The GPI website is pretty cool, they detail a lot of the security features. House molds are a security feature, as well as putting denominations in the molds.

I go mostly to Vegas and they still have a lot of Paulsons there.

You know those great chips they use in the WSOP tournaments? They still have plenty of years of life left, but once they need to be replaced it won't be by clay.

I know. I was wicked annoyed to see them playing with bud jones chips at the poker masters tournaments.

Not so sure about that. They sure don't seem to have a problem extending the life of the sets, adding on almost every year with new clay colors and denominations. They actually switched from BJ plastics in 2007, and haven't ordered anything but Paulson chips since.
