Hey there!

I really enjoyed exploring this site and the forums. I decided to join. I'm not a chip expert, but i do love a great set of poker chips. I figured maybe i could get some advice from some of you who are likely much more educated and informed than I am on availability of some poker chip sets.

About 12 years ago, after doing a bunch of research online and getting some sample sets, I ordered 1000 Paulson Chips (the standard, colored insert/chip denomination). I've loved them. I spent about $1000 on them. My friends thought i was crazy. I use them about 4 times / year and they are still in Mint condition (i think). I almost feel guilty using them if the value is depreciating greatly from use. Any thoughts on this?

More importantly, I was thinking about getting a similar set for my son. And, as you all know, I cant seem to find any Paulson sets readily available. I'm aware that they haven't been making chips for the public anymore. Looking for some advice. Is there any place where i can find any of the following (or anything almost as good)?

Was looking for a VERY nice 1000 chip set for him, likely one of these:

Paulson Top Hat and Cane (with white insert)
Paulson Pharaoh's
Paulson National Poker Series
Paulson Casino De Isthsmus
(I'd be willing to look at Par-A-Dice, or LaCove, and other Paulsons)
(I'd prefer not to get him the same Paulson set as I have).

I think that I've heard the next best thing might be: Key West Resort's Chips?
Then maybe the China Clay type chips like Apache sells: Dunes or Pharaoh's or Milano.

Any advice for me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

And BTW. The chips you have are available and come up for sale from time to time. They a are getting more expensive but they are out there

If you are accustomed to using Paulson chips in near-mint condition, you won't be happy with china clays. Don't waste your time.

Any high-end chip in new or near-mint condition is going to cost quite a bit more than what you spent on those Paulson Classics. The Key West chips or one of the standard offerings from CPC are probably your least expensive and most readily-available option.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum, several of us are in the Atlanta area. The recent sale of Horseshoe Cleveland and Horseshoe Cincinnati have made chip prices drop, and makes a good set available. See some current sales and check with the chip exchange for set price if you don't mind casino used. Otherwise, minty paulsons are in the $2+ range.

Chips are made to be used, so enjoy them.

I wouldn't worry about your chips depreciating from minimum use. You should always be able to get back at least what you paid for them if you ever try to sell.

Keep your eyes on the classifieds if you are interested in a Paulson set for your son. An alternative, more personal gift could be Custom CPC chips - these are real clay and used in Casinos. The Key West line that you mention are CPCs sold by one of our site sponsors.

thanks. I forgot about CPC chips. I remember looking at them back when I bought my Paulsons. I even got sample chips and played around with what designs I might want to create my own designs and colors. They looked pretty darn good at the time too! I guess I should keep my eyes on the classifieds. But do you all recommend that I build a set by picking up denominations as random chips come up? -I'd much rather buy an entire set at once. But not sure if I'll be waiting around forever in hopes that one to my liking and in my price range ever comes up.

CPC has come a long way since then, with all the new colors and edge spots that they now offer, but prices have increased as well.

If you know what denominations you want, and have a price point in mind, you can open up a WTB and see what people have for sale. Otherwise if you know the exact set you want, then sometimes it makes sense to buy it in pieces whenever chips go up for sale.

CPC chips are awesome! Prices have come up, but you get what you pay for. Consider having your son help you design a custom inlay and size the set based on your budget. Check out the CPC (formerly ASM) photos on this and the other chip websites, some of the most amazing sets are custom CPC sets, and the customer service (between the company and your friends here) is unparalleled. Always post your ideas here for constructive criticism, you will be pleased.

Have fun, and never regret using your chips in a game. They need to get out of the box!

Where is the best link/forum to look at some of the best CPC designs ever?

Search for Hall of Fame threads - and Calendar threads, those will provide a good sampling. Also David Spragg started a thread recently asking for submissions for their website. I think there are some great sets included in there. Sorry, Im too lazy to find the links.

welcome! If you ever decide to let them go, I will guarantee you at least what you paid, no matter how much you use them!
