Hello, Im new to PCF, new to buying poker chips, but not new to poker. I've used the chip calculator tool and I notice that when I round up to barrel size, it goes to the nearest 20 but when I go online to all the various sites to buy chips, they say a barrel is 25 chips. What am I missing?

Welcome to PCF!
A barrel is another name used for a stack of poker chips which means 20.
One full rack is 100 chips divided by 5 barrels gives you 20 per barrel. Those poker sites sell them in increments of 25.

Thanks for the reply. I guess selling them in increments of 25 helps to complete a rack more effeciently. I started a small home game and am now obsessed with learning about poker chips. I've ordered sample packs and am constantly playing with them. I'm driving my wife crazy. I stay at work for an extra hour just to do and learn poker chip related things.

You will learn all you need to know here.
Enjoy and keep asking questions.
There are alot of great chips listed.

I binge watched Hobbyphilic channel on YouTube and have probably visited every poker chip site under the sun. Found a couple that you can’t even navigate much without a gaming license. A month ago I had no idea that anyone was this deep into the poker chip world. Now I feel like I’m running through an endless tunnel that’s bound to swallow me up!!

What chips would you recommend? From the few samples I have, I like the rustic ceramics from thepokerstore.com The higher denominations are 43mm and there’s a blank purple that can be used as a bounty chip. It’s the only ceramic sample set I’ve ever owned so my perspective is probably too limited to have a real opinion. As of now, my plan for 2025 is to get a set of ceramics, china clays, and metal slugs and rotate those for a while. See how a year of playing with those alter my opinion or preference. I definitely would love some suggestions though.

Once you feel the ceramics and china clays, you won’t want to touch the metal slugs. Save your money ;)

Why do I get the feeling that PCF consensus will be to walk before you crawl?
On the contrary, I think advice would be save your money and skip the cheap BS if you think you're going to want a clay set.

The window for custom clay is unknown beyond 6 months from now.

The only chips I’d ever handled until 3 weeks ago are the real cheap Walmart brand (potato chip thin) poker chips at a friends home game and whatever they use in the poker rooms in Tunica which I definitely wasn’t paying enough attention, to even remember what they looked or felt like. I for sure noticed a difference in quality but didn’t care enough at the time to leave with a vivid picture in my head. I’ve always been focused on the cards. Whatever they’re using, I’m sure is the other side of the spectrum from Walmart chips. I guess my thought is, try everything in the middle since I can easily go play with examples of the worst and best for free (assuming Tunica poker rooms are using some of the best). Free is probably not the best choice of words…….. lol.

I didn’t believe you! I bought an entire cash and tournament Monaco set from discountpokershop.com I don’t hate them but the ceramics are much nicer. I have a howdy cowboy cash set. Funny enough, all the players at my home game prefer the Monaco. Trying to figure out my next chip purchase. I want a cash and tournament set in each category. I’m think I’m going with one of a combination of majestic and royal card room chips from Apache. Higher denominations will be royal 43mm. I’ll have to wait on even considering Paulson’s. I need to enter a new tax bracket to justify that purchase.

Hi and welcome.
I enjoyed reading the part where you stayed longer at home to learn about poker chips ahah

Talking like a true chipper now! Welcome to the club. Be sure to take it easy and enjoy what you have. It can be easy to get FOMO and envy the beautiful Paulson/CPC sets people have.

Get different sizes too. Check out the Royals from Apache. They are 43mm vs the typical 39mm. Nice color scheme too. But they are China clays and different than Paulsons in feel and price.

There are a ton of good references available here. And if you stay long enough and read enough, you’ll pick up a lot of poker chip knowledge.

Welcome to the show brother!
