Hey everyone!

This is my first post on the forum and have read over some of the posts discussing good beginner sets of poker but thought I would post as well.
Currently, I have a 1000-piece set of 11.5g clay composite suited chips (Picture below just for reference)

I recently decided that I want to up my poker chip collection to something a little nicer for when me and my buddies play some cash home games. I am not looking to break the bank but also want to have something nice that will last. What are some of your suggestions? I have been looking at the Monte Carlo chips and potentially the slowplay chips. Would love some insight! Thanks, everyone.

Welcome!

There are an endless supply of this exact request you could dig through, I mention it so you could find your answers right now. But there should be ample replies soon

You may also want to check out the new members link in my signature (landscape on mobile)

I would suggest looking for Tina or China Clays. Using the search feature you’ll find a lot of info

Happy chipping

Welcome! Link below is your best bet imo, best bang for your buck and you can customize so much, or even go fully custom. No one here is going to recommend Monte Carlos or slowplays over these. On ability to customize and mix and match whatever alone, this is the way.

Hey EastCoastCali,

I saw that post actually but unfortunately, I live in Canada and a lot of those posts are US residents only which is the reason why I am stuck with very limited options being the chips I mentioned above. I love how those chips look though and I really wish I could buy those hahah

Ohh I see. It's worth surfing the classifieds for a used one then IMO. Your players may love the Monte Carlos (I have a set myself) or the slowplays, especially compared to what you have, but to have something more unique and not something any old ape can just buy off amazon, to me, is exponentially cooler.

Changing this reply as I just saw the classifieds show up lol. Thanks again for your help really appreciated.

^^fyp. There is zero clay in those chips; they are just plastic molded around a metal slug inside.

The Monte Carlo chips aren't much different than what you already have; aside from looks and that they have denominations.

"Break the bank" means different things to different people. But if you're looking to buy decent quality chips, plan on spending around 50c/chip or so.

Yes I should have been more precise with what I meant by break the bank. I guess the question arises, do you think it is even worth buying a new set if they arent 50c/chip or above? I guess all the chips that fall under that are similar weight, feel, and sound, the only real difference would be the look I presume?

Yep, not much difference in the 20c-30c range of chips (and many others at inflated prices of twice as much).

Denominations make a big difference in the quality of play experience imo. But I would really question whether they would be worth the money, if I could get both denoms and a nicer chip for just a little more $$.

Thank you I really appreciate the opinion!

If you are talking about these, then I would highly suggest ordering a sample set first. My buddy has these, and they feel terrible... You can feel bits of plastic on the edges, so they feel rough and are hard to shuffle due to the friction. They also look worse in person, in my opinion.

I ordered quite a few sample sets, and my favorite "budget grade" chips were the Monaco Poker Chips from discount poker shop:

Their design wasn't my favorite, but they were perfectly smooth and a breeze to shuffle. Someone on the forum put custom stickers on them, and they came out great.

Whatever you do, order sample sets of everything you are interested in before committing.

These were another option I was considering and after what you said I may have to order a 25pc just to see and feel the quality. Do you know if you are able to choose the denomination with the colour of chip? We play pretty lowes stakes ($50 buy in) and I love the look and colour of the light blue and orange chips but don't typically go up to $10 chips. Thanks again!

You should look at the group buy posted above, I think I've seen Justin ship to Canada before. I have also seen Canadian members talk about crossing over to the U.S. and getting a P.O. box. Google says Toronto is a 2 hour drive from Buffalo, NY so I don't know if you would want to do that or not.

Unfortunately, they are prepacked so the denominations are set. You could look into custom stickers and order the colors you want.

Look at The PokerStore.com for a sample of the smooth Monte Carlo’s. If you have a limited budget, these could be your answer.

I am not looking to break the bank

You've already lost me....

unfortunately, I live in Toronto

FYP (sorry, as a West Coaster, had to do it)

Anyway, all joking aside, take your time to absorb some information. Browse the Classifieds, look at other peoples' design threads. And run away at the mention of "clay composite".

Do you live in the GTA or west of there? I used to live in Sarnia and used a shipping depot in the US for deliveries. You get stuff shipped to the depot and drive across the border to pick up your items. It’s totally up to you what you tell the border agents when you cross back into Canada. I would buy my US groceries and conveniently include small shipped items in my load of groceries. They don’t cross check items on the till receipt with what you have in the bags.

I live in Toronto, but I guess that could be an idea that I could make a day trip out of. I was also looking at straightpokersupplies.com as they are a GTA company. Looks like their chips aren't great quality for a pretty premium price. Any thoughts on any of these chips Monaco Millions, Cash Club, Or Wild West poker? All of these seem to be their low to middle of the pack poker chips (excluding custom made chips)

Same shit, different vendor.

Might be worth asking in the group buy if anyone’s willing to have your order reshipped with theirs. You’re not the only one from outside the US, plenty of people all across the world are using this site to get chips. Just takes a little patience, trust, and politely asking for help in other relevant threads.

As others have said, Tina hybrids are the best value. If you're like most of us here, you're not going to be satisfied with China clays or slugged crap. Just bite the bullet and pay a little more for direct shipping or take the time to cross the border yourself...

Also, chances are you don't need 1000 chips like your current slug set. There's lots of info on optimal breakdowns here.

Get samples.

Agree. 1000 chips are a lot of chips.
