It is in the spirit of how John Hughes considered
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" his "love letter" to Chicago, that formed the idea of turning a photo tribute of my favorite Minnesota landmarks into my custom set. The oversized 43mm chips with the smaller inlays seems to be the right medium to feature the photographs of my favorite landmarks while leaving plenty of room for other design elements.
I fit the landmarks from the pictures (some of which are from Mrs JustinInMN, mind you
) with the colors I selected for each chip in the
Free River Club set.
The design originated with me, and I was able to take it this far sketching in colored pencil:
A humble beginning for sure. Thankfully
@p5woody took my design and turned it into this.
From my original introduction post:
200 * 0.10 (Light green with tan spots, my "mint chocolate" chip, if you will. World's largest walleye - Rush City, MN)
100 * 0.50 (Orange with black spots, my "pumpkin" chip. Semi-cirlce for half. Lake Superior Railroad Museum - Duluth, MN)
800 * 1 (Blue with gray spots. #TeamBlueDollar. Minnehaha Falls - Minneapolis, MN)
550 * 5 (Light red with Tan spots. Triangle looks like V for five. Minneapolis Queen - Minneapolis, MN)
100 * 20 (Yellow with Purple spots. #Skol. XX for twenty. Viking Ship - Minneapolis, MN)
80 * 25 (Green with Orange spots. Diamond Shape. Big Green Lawn Chair, High Bridge Park - St. Paul, MN)
20 * 100 (Black with Yellow spots. Split Rock Light House - Two Harbors, MN)
So you will note the most common denominations are Minneapolis Based, but over the whole set central and northern Minnesota are represented as well.
Not only do I like the design of the chips. I do think there are elements of the breakdown that are at least somewhat novel in set building. I believe this is one of the first sets to explicitly with the dime-half-single progression to accommodate micro stakes. (Though I think
@Kid_Eastwood also did this with The Bank.) I also believe this is one of the first orders to incorporate enough singles to accommodate a limit set, as opposed to building a separate limit set. I also very blatantly played both sides of the 20 v 25 chip debate, which I don't think happens that often either
.
As for other design elements, the photo theme did force me to use the outer ring for other common elements such as the club name and denominations. I also deliberately picked a rolling edge that did not require edge alignment.
I understand that the theme is regional, so I understand appreciation to the broader base of chippers for this set is more in the execution of the idea moreso than particular fondness for the chosen landmarks. (Though I am not going to lie, as a "Princess Bride" fan myself, the execution of
@Nuhockey 's concept is wonderful as well.)
So I hope you enjoy this thread, please consider voting for my set, but in any event, it's an honor to be among all of these wonderful entries for 2020.
