FWIW I made an offer for what I thought was at the top of the range of reasonable and stated as much as respectfully as I could in my email. I didn't receive a response.

No. I made it pretty clear that I was not going to negotiate much. I may have come up a little just to get the deal done, but my price was pretty much my price, so he might have realized that and not been interested in coming down as much as would have been required to make the sale.
