Hey guys,

New here and soon-to-be owner of my first custom set. I wanted to go with BR, because I've heard that they make really nice (and affordable) custom chips. I was going to do some custom colorways and designs that I made myself, but I'm unsure as to what to put on the faces. I don't have a personal design for my "card room" (seeing as it's just my living room). Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone had a similar experience? Should I just design one or is it even worth it to get a custom chipset at that point?

Furthermore, I want to get a 600 chipset, but with 6 colorways. I acknowledge this is a bit odd, but this is what I was thinking for the breakdown:
100x.25 (White)
200x1 (Pink)
150x5 (Black)
25x20 (Lavender)
15x50 (Brown)
10x100 (Dark Blue)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I want to be able to comfortably grow from our .25/.50 game to .5/1 without much difficulty and I'm not sure if this is going to have enough small denoms. Any thoughts are appreciated :)

For 25/50 to 50/$1 stake, the following is the recommended breakdown

25c x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 200
$20 or $25 x 80
$100 x 20

U have zero needs for $50 and you can choose whatever colour ur like as long as they have denominations on it.

I'd take my time and wait to think about a theme, it would suck to drop hundreds on a set that doesn't mean much to me. Keep thinking on themes or things you like, thats what customs are good for! My "card room" is my living room too, doesn't stop me from acting like its a high roller joint in Macau. Yes, we have nickels and quarters on the table but I get to pick the music so its better than most casinos.

Welcome!

BRPro is great! When you're ready they can help you with the design.

I have two links in my signature I would suggest reading through. New Members and Chip Breakdown. (landscape on mobile)

I wouldn't use White for any chip color other than 1 or 100. I wouldn't use black and dark blue together either as BGinGA suggests, and I wouldn't have a 50 chip either as LeLe points out

Yeah I'm quite familiar with this breakdown, but I wanted six colourways :)) I think I may do this but just do 15 $100's and 5 $500's or something—like I said, still kind of unsure on how I want the breakdown.

Black and dark blue in the same set not recommended.
Well okay, I guess it's more of a medium blue. I'm taking the main colors directly from a casino set so I think hopefully they should be okay in the same set (and the little pips are extremely different on the two colours).

HA yeah love the feeling of a good home game. I guess I'll wait and think on a theme—I guess I'm just at a point in my life (junior year of college) where I know I won't be living in my college town permanently and so I don't really know if it would be smart to get one branded for a living room I'll only have for like 8 months. I guess now that I'm writing it out it all feels a bit silly, but I don't know.

Gotcha. Do you think there's any merit to having, say, a few $500 chips instead of the $50 chips? I just am quite set on having six colourways, as those are what I've designed, and I would be remiss to have to let go of one of them :) I'm definitely taking into consideration the dark blue bit though, going to tone it back a bit and make it a little lighter. Thanks for saving me from having to get a second sample set when I realized that mistake myself!

Also, if you don't mind, what's your reasoning for making whites $1 or $100? Just curious. Thank you for the helpful reply :)

@roblewi its not silly at all, we've all been there dude, welcome. Use your last name, use an animal you like, whatever works. As long as you like Bruce Springsteen you'll get along just fine around here. Alternatively, pick up a used set on here, you'll have better chips than the majority of the world and you don't have the pressure of making a forever custom set plus it's re-sellable.

Was thinking about that for sure! My last name isn't really conducive to being on the front of a chip, lol. However, I gave some thought to getting a used set on here. However, they end up being more expensive, wrong amount of chips, don't like the denoms, don't like the chips, etc. At that point I'd rather just save myself the searching and get some custom chips! If I do end up ordering them, I'll be sure to make a post with them.

Also, for anyone seeing this in the future: I was thinking about maybe doing some of the bigger chips with bigger sizes—maybe the few $500s that I get or the $100s (like The Lodge). Does anyone have any ideas on this? Bad? Cool? Not worth?

Sure, you likely will never get to use them, but its better than a 50, have you considered doing an odd ball number like 2.50 or 3 or 8 or 21? that can be crazy and fun

HA sounds like a nightmare but kind of a fun one. $21 chip would be mayhem. I'll definitely keep that one on the back of my mind—think honestly I'd rather do a chip like $77.50 at that point though, really go all out with it. Thanks for the suggestion!

For sure. For customs I made my whole cash set 43mm, and my tournament set is 43mm (the usual casino chip is 39mm) except for the higher denoms which are 50mm dinner plates. The size differentiates them and gives more space for pretty artwork, love them.

reasoning for making whites $1 or $100?
Because of the Nevada standard where whites are $1, its so predominate that it confuses players. I found even I would use the white fracs as dollars because it is so standard.

I've done this in some of my sets, here check out my thread, you'll see photos of my 43mm set with oversized 20 where I use 47mm for the 20s

I'd recommend taking your time until you figure out a meaningful custom theme that you will appreciate. Once you figure this out, there's nothing better IMO (coming from someone that's not a collector).

If you want a higher quality set in the interim, pickup something generic that can be resold (or keep it if you want multiple sets).

Try and maximize contrast among adjacent chip denominations by base colour. Use contrasting colours in graphics on the face of the chip when you can to further distinguish them visually.

The bottom line is you want to be able to accurately estimate what's in the pot as well as player chip stacks when you look at them from the face/side.

Wow I looked at the set and that Russian chip is so cool - I would definitely buy a set with cool handwritten Russian like that. (I speak, that’s actually why I’m in Latvia). If you ever see a cool custom Russian-themed set I’d definitely be interested.

So why 6 colors?

Here is what your start was

This would be a better line up:

Well to be completely transparent, I saw the Le Gold set (including a picture) and fell in love with the designs and pips and made some similar designs. And I figured since it’s a casino set it must be quite stress-tested with being able to differentiate the different denoms.

Also update, I made some mock designs for the center that I really like. Let me know what you guys think, will it be too hard to see? Too dark? Etc. Super interested in your guys’ opinions.

So that was the label out of @Nex 's set, check this out! You can read the inspiration of it - https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/kings-of-the-cinder.29986/
He goes into great detail about the origin of the set.
Here is a spoiler of the labels

Would you ever play micro-stakes for fun? Instead of $50 how about 5 cent chips?
YES! I like this idea

While I might quite like the idea, I don't really want to order the amount of 5 cent chips necessary to viably play micro. For example, I can easily buy 15 $500 chips or something, but I would need to get a much larger portion of 5 cent chips to play micro and I don't think they'd be in play nearly enough to make it viable.

Just make it a no-denom generic chip that you can then use in a variety of different ways. 20 chips should be plenty, and you can use it as either a Rebuy, Bounty, Show 'Em, Rock, or an extra denom chip as needed /desired.

Just following this thread, super helpful as i’m also thinking about getting custom chips and play the same stakes so the denomination breakdown helps a lot
