Not sure if this belongs in this forum, but here it is.

I use a custom silver coin as a guard, usually without a case. But now I wonder if I should be using it in the case, possibly to protect the cards being used. Never much thought about potentially scoffing or damaging a host's (or my own) playing cards unintentionally, but now I wonder.

Thoughts? Experiences?

I've used silver dollars before without a case. I don't think there's a lot of additional risk of damage there, but maybe somebody else has a story.

I once saw a host ask someone using a heavy coin to stop using it, claiming that it did damage the cards. No idea if it did actually damage the cards.

More over

after being in "the other chip site" for years and now PCF i've never really been offended till now.

Here's my card guard. it is cast iron. I spent over 8 hours rubbing it down and shining it to a reflection you can see your face in it. Then i took a great deal of time to polish any rough edges off the bottom as NOT to mark any cards.

So if i were asked not to use it i can only come to 1 conclusion why That is i am trying to mark the cards. Pretty obvious right!?!?

So if i am trying to mark the cards there are only really 2 reasons i can come to as to why:

first is - im an asshole and want to stuff other peoples stuff up

Or

Second Im cheating by marking the cards.

so if i was asked by any host not to use my card guard id be confused about what conclusion to make - are you saying im an asshole or a cheater? Cause both are NOT welcome at my game.

And yeah im offended either way.

Third option is that the cards in use are expensive (Modiano PA, Angel) and the owner is concerned about accidental damage. You know the care you put into getting that guard setup...they may not.

Having witnessed a dice chip go through a Copag card when multiple players at the game repeatedly peeked at their cards while the chip was still on top (finger deftly placed on the chip so that it didn't fall off), it is possible.

Put some felt on the bottom. Problem avoided.

I have seen more then one thread showing semi-circular indentations on the backs of cards and inquiring what it might be from. Invariably the answer is that someone has used a coin or chip as a card protector and, instead of sliding it off or otherwise preventing the guard from damaging the cards, the player will push down on the card guard while peeking, running the risk of such damage. I would have no problem with the anvil shown earlier, or any other protector (within reason). It is how the player USES that protector that can raise problems.

also i think its more likely that someone uses a chip to check(as in knock) using the chip to hit the cards. i was at a game where all the jacks had mysterious chip type dents in them. Why the jacks!?!? who knows. but it was very Odd that it was only the jacks.
