Hi there,

I’m new to the game and am just curious what the big difference is in chip count and denominations for cash sets and tournament sets. Obviously with tournament sets you need to have more, but different counts for different denominations?
Thanks!

In general tournament sets have less chips per player. About 40 chips or 400 per table are all that is needed for a tournament set. The breakdown is more evenly spread out over the denominations.

Cash sets with usually have $ on them. Most cash sets will need at least 600 chips minimum to be playable for a single table. The breakdown will be weighted towards a lot more of the workhorse chips and a smaller amount of chips for the blinds and bigger chips for rebuys.

Here's a little something that I've been working on. It's a quick little guide/tool for newbies concerning cash and tourney set setups. This is just a first draft so if anyone has any suggestions or wants to debate the recommendations, have at it. This thread is probably as good a place as any to post feedback.

This is a pretty cool and helpful resource, thanks!

There doesn't *have* to be a big difference between cash and tournament denominations. But the biggest reason it is usually done is for security. You don't want chips used for tournaments show up in cash games because their ascribed value may be very different.

Cash denoms follow the stakes you play and the local currency. For most people in North America, UK, and the Eurozone, it's commonly 0.25, 1, 5, 25 (or 20), and 100. Cheaper stakes may also use 0.05 (and even 0.01), while higher stakes can incorporate 500, 1000, 5000, or what-have-you.

Tournament denoms usually follow common tournament sizes and blind structures played at casinos or seen at events. They generally do not have currency symbols on them, only a number (though we usually add a "T" as a symbol to help differentiate from cash). You can build all sorts of tournament structures using similar number values, from T1, T5, T25, T100 , etc. to T100,000 and beyond if you need. Popular structures use T25 or T100 chips as their base unit.

That’s awesome, thanks for the resource! I don’t see myself hosting a big tournament but I would like to have enough chips for up to 10 people in a cash game.

This is awesome! Thank you for putting this together. Definitely helped me when purchasing my first set.

My first Paulson set was a T5 set that I add a rack too so I could use it as a cash or tournament set, my players didn't care about a $/c on the chip. At the time we only played 25c/50c so I used the T25 as 25c the rack bought as $1's and the T5 as $5's. When the cash game grew to 1/2 I added more 5's and 25's.
