Has anyone played in a tournament where re-buys are less than the buy-in?

I do half price re-buys because I want people to stick around and they'd be more likely to just dip out at full price.

Our rebuys are full price, but for 10-25% more chips than the starting stack (need not be felted, must surrender any remaining chips).

Does that count?

Probably get laughed at, but...

Yes, for a 19 year no-money game, so purpose of cheaper rebuy is more targeted/unique...

A single rebuy each permitted in the first six levels at 1/3 of starting stack. Was mostly implemented to allow new players a second chance and enjoy themselves a bit longer, since regs destroy newbs. But a reduced rebuy was needed due to being no-money game; a way to discourage losing an entire starting stack knowing you could just rebuy for free for a full stack. Works quite well for us, since people treat the game seriously rather than the silliness that a no-money game often ends up as.

For money game, I still kind of like the concept. Perhaps a single half stack rebuy at half cost. Make people weigh up the risk; would I rather keep my 3/4 stack or risk rebuying for even fewer chips. But, my preference for money tournaments is for freezeouts, so bit biased.

As usual, I think it depends on your game. For me, I want a casual game where people make friends first, money second. So I allow one rebuy about 2/3rd the original buy-in amount through level 4. It's not so dirt cheap that people play super splashy; but it accounts for rebuy stacks being worth less due to the higher blind levels.

I also offer an ad-on at first break for 1/3 the buy-in amount. So technically - if you rebought and added-on - you're paying for a full rebuy.

2/3 seems a pretty fair deal to me. It encourages people to rebuy if they do felt (which increases the prize pool), but isn't so dirt cheap you feel you can be a jerk on your first buy-in.

I've always liked freezouts and never cared for rebuys, so I REALLY don't like the idea of a cheaper rebuy. You're encouraging recklessness with that format. Good for the prizepool, bad for the nit.
But of course I understand how rebuys can make sense for home games.

In that case, I've enjoyed a format where you get 15k chips for $x and you're allowed up to two additional bullets. So you can bust twice and rebuy (or rebuy twice immediately and start with 45k.) But if you make it to the break with an unfired bullet, that $x will get you a 20K addon (and another 15K rebuy if you've only fired once.)
So it's not a cheaper rebuy. But it's the only format that I like that gets you cheaper chips later in the tournament.

for the past few years I have done half price rebuys and half price addon in some tournaments and it gets more money in the pot then when I do more expensive ones, not even close.
