New member here. Trying to upgrade slowly before committing $1000+ on a set. I've heard people discuss the smell of China Clays. Is it repulsive or you just notice there's a different smell in the room? I was looking at the Majestics from Apache or maybe Milanos. Will definitely get samples but didn't know if only a handful of chips will have the same affect.

Majestics have a "burnt electronics" smell to me. I have to hold them up to my nose to smell them though. I've heard other people say they notice the smell just sitting at the table. You would probably need to get samples to see how they affect you. In comparison, the smell of Copags is so strong to me that opening a new setup is like getting punched in the face.

Interesting. I’ll get some samples and see what it’s all about. My worry was them being much stronger with a table full of chips but that shouldn’t be an issue. I didn’t even think about copags having a scent until you said something.

My Royals were pretty pungent. I could smell them while playing if my stack was big enough. Not so much "repulsive", more "not pleasant".

Get samples and you'll know.

I used to think people were exaggerating about the Copag smell, until I finally got a deck that had it and suddenly I understood. I guess I just got lucky with my first several decks and then didn't need to buy any more for several years.

I'm glad you said that because I knew I'd owned copags in the past and never noticed the smell. But when I bought a setup of Copag Exports a couple of years ago, I was surprised by the smell. It's pretty strong.

I bought four or five setups between 2004 and 2008 or so, and because we only met once or twice a month max didn't really need any more after that for a while. Bought my first deck since then at the end of last year and got punched in the face when I opened them. A quick wash and dry and then airing them overnight fixed them up but I was worried I wouldn't be able to use them at first.

By contrast (and to bring it back on topic), the china clay samples I got didn't smell as strongly and I had to get a lot closer to them to notice the smell, though it definitely was there.
