I know several users here have personal spreadsheets or databases for their chip collections, but I was just thinking if we shared our own tips/advice on this, it might help others.

So over the weekend I created an Excel workbook with 4 worksheets: Chips, Samples, DBs and Cards

Chips is for playable sets
Samples is for sample sets
DBs is for Dealer Buttons
Cards is for my setups

One thing I discovered that was pretty cool, was how to get an image of the chip to appear on a certain cell, this way each row is not huge just to get the image in place. The trick is to use a "Comment" bubble, delete the text and then edit it 1"x1" in size and under Color/Lines choose the "Fill" option and select "Picture" and then choose your image. That makes the image the background for the comment box and only appears when you mouse over the cell you choose. The hardest part has been trying to locate good images of the sets I have and get screenshots of each chip.....

In terms of what I'm tracking, I thought the following headers were good, but there might be others (e.g. 'artwork by'):
Company/Brand (GOCC, PGI, OWPS, etc)
Chip Type (Clay, Ceramic, China Clay, Plastic Dice of course)
Color(s)
Denomination
(Cash or T#)
Quantity
Cost
(my purchase cost, may want to skip if spouse has access to file!) ;)
Notes

Anyone else have ideas or suggestions, I'm always looking for spreadsheet tricks/tips

When I had my biggest collection I had a simple sheet, the colums were as follows:
Company
Chip
Style
Material
Mold
Denomination
Amount of chips
Total denomination value
Real value in USD per chip
Value total in USD
Value total in EUR
Set
Since downgrading my total chip count I have not updated the sheet anymore.

The only sheet I have is a list with my current sets along with some details re: price. It also instructions for my wife on how to get to PCF ("Click on the little orange poker chip in the bookmarks toolbar :)) and start a WTS, with each set having an "accept nothing less than $XX" price by it (edit: this *should* only be necessary should something unexpected happen to me - hopefully not because I pissed her off something fierce).

Date purchased and name of seller.
Another tab/column for sales (if any ;))
A tab for casino chip collectibles, using the sample tab is for customs, semi-customs, and retail lines

I use the Collector's Assistant software for my casino chip collection. This software works very well, and the database can be customized to include other categories (sets, customs, sample sets, etc.). Alas, mine is woefully out of date. I'll update it when (or if) I retire.

You guys are way more organized than I. I have thousands of chips that I have no idea who I bought them for or how much.

I prefer to keep track of my chips by the expression my fiancé gives me each time I mention a set.

"Milanos? That could have been groceries!"

"Ceramic Scrolls? That's a nice dinner out!"

"Key west? That's a mortgage payment!"
