Hello,

I am looking to start building a cash set for playing with family/friends, microstakes, maybe as high as .25/.25 at some point.

I upgraded from dice chips to a 500 chip set of the Mint chips, but would like to get something better this time around.

The problem I have is finding decent (defined as least China clay or ceramic) that have a stock .05 chip.

I would prefer not to do custom chips.

From what I can gather my only stock choices are Majestics, the CC Pharaoh's, the CC CPS set, or Archtype ceramics.

I would prefer to keep it less than .75 a chip, and plan only buying 100 or so chips at first( would like to have chips for 8 ppl, $160 in chips or so, eventually) for playing heads-up and trying them out.

Anyone have thoughts or can point me in another direction.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Get samples first, then buy the set you like out of those..

Shipping 100 or 500 is not much more, so you could save on shipping, once you have samples you can immediately know what you like and dont like..I

I have many sample sets and I chose the Pharaoh's set.. But the Majestics would have been my next pick.

Welcome, and have fun around here..

I have thought about samples, but the sample sets don't have the .05 chip in them. But I guess the sample set is more for feel then checking the colors?

consider a non-denom chip. and welcome to the forum
I have thought about nondenom chips, but the only ones I have found this far are the PGI edgespots.

I am wanting to build a tournament set of Milanos at some point and am not sure I want to have blank chips as well.

When you say the PGI, you mean the blanks?

When people are suggesting a non-denom, they mean to choose an set than includes one non-denom chip in an otherwise-denominated set. You can then use the non-denom chip for the 5c, and all the rest play normally. The non-denom chip in a set won't be blank - it will just have no denomination on it. It may say "NCV" on it.

Another option is to just play a stock chip as a nickel.

I used to use a set of Monaco Club chips for my Two-Bit poker game; the big blind is 25c, and the small blind is half that. I used these chips:

For the small blind, we played the 50c chip. I said to think of it as 50% of a quarter. Nobody had a problem with it.

I could just as easily have played the 50c chip as a nickel, or the $500, or the $5000. The color on the 50c or the $5000 is better, so as to stand out from the other lower-value chips.

The point here is that you may have a lot more options if you can get away from wanting "5c" on the chip. I origianlly planned to relabel my 50c chip, but never got around to it, because it simply worked fine for all involved.

In fact, since I never play these any more, I should put my Monacos up for sale...

Thank you for pointing that out. Looking for sets with a 25¢ and a ncv chip might open up a few more options.

Another thought, while I'm at it - you can make a very playable micro set with a lot of stock sets by just playing dollars as cents.

$5 - 5c
$25 - 25c <-- workhorse
$100 - $1. <-- workhorse
$500 or $1000 - $5 or $10. (Can go either way for the value chip, it's not a workhorse)

If I were using the Monaco Clubs this way, I'd use the $1000 for a $10 bank chip. I like a little more contrast on the table so people don't lose sight of the bank chip at the table (makes a big difference in stack size.)

Venerati ceramics come to mind - you can use the blue Lion chip as a nickel - but I don't know if the Veneratis are going to be restocked, soon.

That is the first set that I thought of when u said that. I'll ask the company and see what they say.

I have also considered downscaling denoms, but don't really like the idea, though I cannot give u a good reason.

Thanks.

I think several of the Chipco ceramic home lines have .05, .10, .25...Casino, Classic and Oysters come to mind.
I know I don't care for the oysters and am considering a sample of the classics. What do the casinos look like or where can I buy them from. Having a hard time pinning that one down

So I had it narrowed down to about 6 sets, three of which are from Apollon chips.

Does anyone know how you can get samples from them or if you can order then from here in the states. I tried to order about 30 chips and it was going to be $40 in shipping. Of course I could not order them because you need to order at least 25 of any denom and at least 300 (I think) total from a given set.

The Apollon chips are at the top of my budget anyway.

The other three are Card Wars (using $10 as dimes, $50 as halves , etc), the Valentino chips (probably with some custom nickles) or the Venerati (which the lower demons and NCV chips are on back order for 4 to 6 weeks).

Starting to consider Milano's (maybe with some custom labels for nickles, I saw a thread were it was being done, looked nice!)(https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/milano-nickels-interest.7759/page-2) or Majestic's.

So the I asked the wife (she plays poker heads up with me and bigger games with family/friends) what she thought of the various sets and she says "I thought we settled this whole you needing nicer poker chips when you got rid of the ones (dice chips), did ALL THAT RESEARCH and bought those others (the Mint)"... I was gonna laugh, then I saw she was serious!

Check out the Nextgen chips. The sample set I got was way nicer than any pictures on the web. Just a thought.
