Straight Flush
I photographed an event this past weekend that honored Craig Patrick of Penguins/Rangers fame, and Assistant Coach of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' USA Olympic hockey team.
I was tasked with getting photos of him with guests, so I was able to interact with him all night, eavesdrop on some cool stories, and chat with him for a little bit. He was the nicest guy - incredibly down to earth - and happy to talk to anyone about his experiences over the years, and especially that 1980 team. The guy clearly loved that time in his life, and would talk to anyone about it who would listen!
I was finally able to snag some private time with him and I asked him about the scene in the movie where Herb Brooks, the head coach, made them do sprints (for what seemed like an hour) after the exhibition game they tied against the Norwegians in Norway. I said, "that really looked like a lot of 'Hollywood drama' to me, what really happened?" And he quickly shot back, "there wasn't much Hollywood in that scene at all!"
He said Herb was furious at how they played, and everything happened almost exactly as how it was depicted in the movie. The only differences were that Herb had the whistle and kept sending them on sprints over and over again, while Craig was the one who ended up speaking to the rink manager (not the team doctor). He said the rink manager was really pissed and just wanted to go home. Eventually, he did end up turning off the lights and leaving the key.
Pretty cool knowing it really happened:
