Greetings Programs!
Just thought I’d share the debacle of my recent weekend at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City.
Let me preface by saying that this was originally supposed to be a wedding anniversary getaway which was postponed due to a nasty stomach virus. Getting it bumped to the 17-18th was a nice Father’s Day bonus, and we were really looking forward to it - non-smoking room and king sized bed here we come!

So after a hectic day, we arrive about 5pm on Saturday and promptly check in. After dumping our stuff in the room, which had a very faint odor of weed, we left for dinner and some gambling. After a bout of bad luck and -$300, we decided to call it an early night because we were both tired.

Around 1am my wife wakes me up and says something smells in the room. After clearing my head I realize there was a heavy stench of weed coming from somewhere. She said she was starting to get a headache and I called the front desk. I explained our predicament to the front desk receptionist and she said there were no other rooms to move us to… sorry!
I asked for the manager and she said “If you want to speak to the manager you have to come down to the front desk.” Very curt, very rude tone.

We got dressed, grabbed all our things, and went to see the manager. After another deflection from a receptionist, my tone went from pleasant to aggravated. I asked to speak with the manager. He comes out with a deadpan look on his face and in the briefest, I-don’t-give-a-fuck tone tells me “There’s no other non-smoking rooms. I’ll send housekeeping up to spray the room to remove the smell.”
I said “So instead of the smoke/stench in the room, you want us to breathe the chemicals you’re gonna spray all throughout the room? How is spraying going to stop the smoke/stench from coming in?!”
”That‘s all I can do.”
”That‘s not going to solve the problem! I‘d like a refund.”
”No refund because you’ve been here since 5.”
I said “We haven’t been in the room since then! We were woken up by something that shouldn’t be in a non-smoking room. I want a refund because we aren’t going back in there. I’ll drive the 2 hours to go back home if I have to!”
Denied again.
Then he said “I’ll send security up too.”
I asked “What the hell is security going to do?!”
”They’ll find where the smell is coming from and tell them to stop smoking.”
… I looked at him like he was batshit crazy, which he was!
I said “You really think those people will stop smoking just because you tell them to?” How long/much must they been smoking for it to stink up my room in the first place?? There was no smell in the hallway, just in our room, so there was no way for them to find them unless they banged on every door at 1am.

I demanded a refund again and was curtly refused. I said “Well, we aren’t staying in that room. Can you arrange another room in one of your affiliated…“ and his head was shaking ‘No’ before I even finished.
”Why not?”
”Our computers aren’t linked to there’s.”
”Can’t you make a phone call…”
“No. Can’t [won’t] do that.”
”Then I want to speak to YOUR supervisor…”
”There’s no other supervisor here.”
”Then we’re leaving. We‘re not staying in that room.”
”Ok. Fine. [I don’t give a shit]”

I saw him go over to the receptionist that was helping us, expecting him to check us out of the room.
I drove home 2+ hours to get home by 3:30am.
The next day I decided to call and see if the manager checked us out or not because his incompetence was just that evident. He didn’t check us out. I laughed when the lady asked us to come down.

Ive been giving the Trop my business for the better part of 24 years. No longer.
And that’s how my long-awaited weekend was ruined.

I'm sorry to hear this.

You may be surprised about what a politely worded, but direct letter to a customer service address for the hotel may get you. If the people answering their letters and emails have the same IDGAF attitude, a not so nice Google review is certainly warranted. Hell, I even think it's warranted now if you don't want to go through the trouble of trying the nice route via letter/email. Someone with a respiratory illness can seriously get ill from inhaling that much smoke/weed.

Did a bit of research and this seems to be the customer service line that all the bad Google reviews are relayed to

Sorry OP.

Presenting a tale told by two reviews

I would protest the charge on your credit card. Unacceptable.

Ironically, I had to fight with Tumi customer service about a repaired (that wasn't repaired) bag.

Customer service has turned into a complete dumpster fire lately.

I can understand if, at 1am, they‘ve been working 10 hours straight and are burnt out, but that doesn’t justify their horrible behavior. The industry is supposed to be built around pleasing the patrons, not chasing them away. I tried the calm approach initially, and I tried the incredulous-paying-customer approach… now it’s the I’m-striking-back move.

I called their corporate customer service number today and someone is looking into it. I just hope they do right by me.

Thanks for the info @JMC9389 !
I‘ve already posted a comment on their Facebook page, left a scathing review with the BBB, and now trying to remember my Twitter password to post there too.
A Google review will cover all my bases.

If I don’t get a reply by tomorrow I’m definitely calling to protest the charges.
Never in 20+ years have I had to deal with this situation or bad employees.
Nobody should!

Something similar happened to us at the Monte Carlo in Vegas, except it wasn't weed and it wasn't cigs.
Was it meth?
You know some crackheads had a meth lab in the Trop’s West tower some time ago.
I‘m sure THEY got better customer service than I did!

I’ve written off the Tropicana many years ago. Such a shame because it’s got potential. It’s Borgata or Ocean Resort for me now.
Not a fan of Ocean. I‘ve hated the floor plan of the building since I first walked in. The rooms are nice and all, but that’s all that made the list.
Can you believe that I still haven’t played in the Borgata poker room yet??
A shame, I know.

Not sure. It was like a burning plastic smell.

My wife son and I are going down to the Trop down towards the end of the summer. My wife wanted to go to Cape May, Wildwood, and possibly Ocean City NJ. I figured stay at the trop so I could get in some poker at night. Plus the rooms are cheap during the week. They also have an arcade my son could play at, I love the Borgata for poker, but there is not much for minors to do there. Hopefully the room will be fine. I haven’t been there in about 10 years to the Trop.

In your situation I always tweet, FB, and email the company. When I had issue with products or services publicly contacting them so other ppl can see it usually gets a company moving in regards to taking care of you.

I would be cautious about staying there. You might not have any problems, but if you do, don’t expect the staff to do anything to help… unless you’re a high level member and then you’ll probably be treated like royalty (maybe).
Try to get a room in the North tower. They had us in the Havana Tower and it was gross.

I tried posting a tweet on their page and my account got locked for some reason.
Am I on probation because it’s a new account?
I‘m going to shoot them an email soon too - gotta cover all my bases.

Your first mistake is staying at the Trop.

That place has been disgusting for a very long time. I stayed there in 2003 and thought it was nasty.

My company sponsors a booth at a medical convention they host every year. I stay at Borgata and tell my salespeople to do the same. During the week pre summer it was only $130 a night! 5-6 years ago a rep of mine didn’t listen and used the room block the Trop gave us. She came in the night before arrives at the booth the next morning all disgruntled. I asked “what’s wrong”? She says “I should have listened to you…the room was disgusting”.

Since Borgata opened I’ve stayed and played there 99% of the time I go to AC. Revel/Oceans has nice rooms but it’s a pain to get there compared to Borgata. Borgata is the King of AC casinos for the last 20 years. It a tad less nice now then when we started going …but it’s also 20 years old!

It's almost more about the dismissive attitude than the weed smoke in a non-smoking room.

If the hotel was really sold out they could've sucked up the cost of one room to keep a customer happy.
I agree! It’s bad business to treat customers that way. If I was a raving lunatic then I could see how the attitude would’ve fit, but a rational customer with a serious concern is no cause for them being dicks.

I‘m going there next month, so I’ll do what I can to build some comps. I’ve only seen some shows at the Borgata and maybe a second playing blackjack, but I’m sure it’ll be walking into a 5-star hotel after staying in the cardboard box that is now the Trop.

I’ve never stayed at any of the newer casinos like the new Hard Rock, etc but I’ve never been interested. They may be nice but I don’t know.

It’s hard to describe just how incredibly different Borgata was when it opened. It turned AC upside down. I read an article in Casino Player magazine around 2005-6 that $700m in improvements had already happened at other AC casinos in the first couple years after Borgata opened. Every casino had a cheesy theme before and none did after. They all were scrambling to level up. Borgata brought a lot of much needed class to AC.

Don't want to derail but I'm shocked only 7 states don't allow smoking in 100% of hotel rooms.
That’s amazing though, given how many gamblers smoke. They should at just have separate towers for smokers and non-smokers instead of mixing them together.

I remember that time when the casinos tried to make themselves newer/fresh. The mad scramble to stop the exodus of patrons to the Borgata was futile - the Borgata was too good!
I must admit that I like the themed casinos, especially the Luxor and Excalibur in Vegas. I’d rather stay in a hotel that has a decor that fits my style than stay in a neutral, formal casino, but that’s just me.
