So I don't really do stuff other than buy in classifieds here, I don't pm and I don't eBay.

But it seems like to build racks I need to start picking up singles on eBay. I've created an account, and see the below:

Is it as easy as just plugging in your max bid nowadays? I remember like 20 years ago when my mom was using it there was like a snipe auto bidder thing you needed. No mas?

Other eBay questions:
1) What in the world is this?! Signed posters of a chip seller? Is this akin to streamers selling bath water, or am I buying chips from a famous person? I'm only half joking, it's a real question.
2) I know that ThunderSnow is banned here, but I have absolutely 0 idea as to why. They're solid to buy from yeah?
3) On that note, do we have a thread somewhere with a list of Ebayers to avoid purchasing from? PCF obviously feels safe, I have no clue what to look out for entering the wild west interwebs.

You can just put in your bid and hope it doesn't get sniped with 4 seconds left.

I kinda recall what your talking about but never used it. I actively bid my high bid at the last second which means you have to watch it end.

Thunder Snow is a major seller that MANY of us buy singles from confidently. I have no idea if/why she is banned here.

Oh sheesh. So you still kinda have to manipulate it? No good to just toss in my max bid now because it'll just bid up now? Which it does automatically at the end anyways yeah?

I mean so it's almost kinda like a blind auction a bit, of everyone just racing at the tail end it seems. Lol I'll test this and see how it goes, I may not be long for uncharted non pcf waters.

Alot of people put their max bid in and whatever happens happens. Nothing wrong with that. It just seems like singles (the good ones) are swarmed on pretty hard. You just never know.

I use an auction sniper that will place a bid for me with 6 (or or 4 or even 3) seconds left. Many auctions end either when I'm asleep or are otherwise unavailable, but it exists outside eBay. It's not necessary to be able to bid, but is useful.

I'm not sure what that pre-selected bid amounts popup you see is. It's always been "enter your maximum bid amount" for me.

The sniper I use:

It's free to use, but the paid option ($9 a year) has a few additional features.

I have done a lot of buy and selling on eBay this past year.

Unless you really want something I usually put in close to the top of my max price in there and watch it close to the end. I usually dont want to miss out on something for like a dollar or two more. But if someone blows past my top end they can have it.

The best way to see if a seller is legit is look at the sellers account. Check age (older the better usually), and then look at feedback and look for sellers feedback. Then if there are negatives read what they were about and make a judgement call there. Generally if its a bad seller there will be signs. But if there are very few negative reviews vs a lot of good ones and the negative reviews seem a bit nit picky (which you will eventually get as a seller), then I usually see them as legit. But if any of the reviews start talking about fakes or knock offs I start to get wary, and do some deeper dives.

This is good enough most of the time. Be honest with yourself and enter your max bid. Let eBay do their automatic bidding to keep you in the lead, but only up to your limit. No one will see your max bid until the current bid goes higher. If the bid does go higher, well, you don't want it anyways since it will be too expensive, right?

Thanks all, wasn't asking just to waste breath.

I'm logged in, paid, and connected. Time to add in a bunch of eBay items.

(also really really really really really REALLY would be nice if there was a private page/group here for all the eBayers so that we aren't bidding up each other and competing. or a slack channel or a whatever where we coalesce, share a looking for list, etc.)

eBay you have to snipe. Throw ur bid in last minute/seconds. Zero reason to bid it up and garner interest.

Another thing if there is a buy it now option, but you place a bid, I believe it removes the buy it now sale offer. This is good and bad. You may want to get a bid in to block someone from buying it now.

I’m not sure why thunder snow is banned here? Are you sure they are banned?

They annoy me. I have bought several chips off them before and when I was hunting treasure island $1s, a retail $4-$6 chip, I was buying several other singles off them at big prices. I asked them nicely when they land some TI $1s please lmk, and they said they would.

Then a few weeks later they post a bunch on eBay for like $15 each. I message them, and they give me some smartass comment “chip collecting is going nuts now, sorry!”

You can F right off.

Talk about not understanding business and taking care of repeat customers. I’ll never buy a chip from them again. Idc if it’s the last hot stamp $100 I need. Mikeauto school of chipping as far as im concerned.

They also overprice some live chips I think on purpose to catch a sucker.

The autographed posters. As some like to say…weird…

I'm in a private message group on here (PCF) where we communicate on who's bidding on what so we aren't bidding each other up. So yes I agree that could be a good possible idea. I would imagine a pissing match might happen if it's public on here though...

The guys I'm in a group with have specific types of chips that they are looking for. Do you have a specific niche or just collecting singles that you think are beautiful???

Fuck thunder snow.

If my maths are correct, thats:
  • are they banned? - 1
  • everyone uses them, they're great - 1
  • they can go f**k themselves off a bridge - 2
It's early in the game, looking like it could go either way!

If you don't want to drive the price up on something, you have to snipe it in the last remaining seconds. Back in the late 90's when the Internet was new and eBay helper sites didn't exist, I would just do this manually. Shortly after, there were sites that you can pay to do the snipe for you. I've been using ESnipe.com for this for over 25 years. You login, paste in the link for the auction, set it for like 5 seconds or so.

Essentially, bidding anytime before the last few seconds just drives the price up. You get into a bidding war with people that don't know better. Great for sellers, not great for buyers.

I don't think a snip service does anything more than hiding your interest. Could be wrong, but setting your max bid will autobid at the last second up to your cap. It's a bit annoying that it doesn't add a few seconds at the end if someone is bidding as I've missed a few chips by a dollar.

That being said, as long as you're not bidding on some firecracker sale, I've found a couple great deals on singles I've been hunting for. Some chips go for absurd numbers and some seem to go for quite a bit less than I was expecting.

Posting a "Max Bid" only increases what you will pay assuming others continue to out bid you.
Example: An auction starts at $1 on a chip you value at $20. You bid $1 and set your "Max Bid" at $20. Minimum bid increments are $1. Someone bids $2 beating your $1 and your "Max Bid" kicks in making it $3. This could go on and on until your $20 is surpassed. Had you simply followed the auction and waited to sniper at the end you may have gotten the item for a substantial savings.

It appears they are banned or maybe they just deleted their account (if that is even a thing). Regardless it will not pop up. They showed up and probably quickly realized their “business model” was not going to work with the educated chippers here and basically showed themselves the door. I also have experienced their customer disservice and will never buy from them.

Good to know! I can and will only speak from my own personal dealings, communication and transactions and it has all been fantastic. This is why I am part of this community though, to find out more about anything chip wise from others experiences as well so I appreciate everyone's input.

I have had other horrible experiences with different vendors (one that regularly sells here) but I keep that to myself unless someone asks me directly.... as JBarrie did on this post about TSnow. I can see how her business model wouldn't fit in here whatsoever and that's okay.

100%

Everyone that bids early drives the price up insuring bidders will pay more. If I'm going to bid early just to show interest or get rid of a buy in now price, I will bid the minimum to do so. So say $10 will get rid of the buy it now, I'm going to bid $10, never more than you have to and never the highest amount you're willing to pay.

The downside can be if the price stays low and the seller thinks they're not going to get enough money. Sometimes they will cancel the auction or sell in a side deal. Though even if there are multiple bids and the item will sell, a seller can always cancel all bids and cancel the auction. This can also happen if there is a side deal.
