This question is specifically for those who have used or built with Dual Size cup holders (in the rail).

If you were doing it over, would you use the Dual Size cup holders again, or would you go with Jumbo instead?

For those who want to rant about not using cup holders (in the rail) at all, thanks for coming...

Comments about the good and bad of Dual Size cup holders are encouraged. Generic responses about cup holders in general - not so much.

Edit - for those who don't know what a Dual Size cup holder is, it has a top section that is jumbo size, and a bottom section that is regular size. Same overall height (mostly - one model is deeper). See @TKEUofM's post #3 for a picture, or this link...

Maybe I'm an idiot, but what is a dual size cup holder? Would that be what I usually call "jumbo"?
Assuming it's something like this that will fit both a beer bottle and a larger rocks glass?

Right. I've never tried them, but I've always wondered if they're any better or worse. For what it's worth, in my experience with jumbo, it's imposible to actually spill a beer bottle, even though there's room for them to tip - if you had a freshly opened but not sipped beer bottle, a little bit might splash out, but I still haven't seen that happen.
Anyway, I'm following to hear the feedback.

Jumbo cup holders were necessary for spill-proofing and rocks glasses, I'd do it 100 out of 100 times. Not sure what dual size is, I don't need extra depth though.

Dual size seems like an accident waiting to happen. If you have an odd size cup or something that's just barely bigger than the smaller recess it could tip into that and tip over. A larger oversized cup holder would be better because at least then it would accommodate everything.
Or better yet no damn cups on the table and you don't have the problem.

Is this speculation, or have you actually used them in a real life situation?

Yeah, this isn't meant to be yet another thread to continue the endless anti-cupholder debate, thanks anyways.

Yes actually I've had a couple vehicles with dual size cup holders and they suck.
I'd rather just have one big one that fits anything. Yes small stuff will move around but does your table shake like an earthquake to need it?
The main reason I'd use a cup holder is place to put a cup and not leave a ring on the table. If the guys playing are that clumsy they tip drinks over any cup holder still may not prevent that or tipping it while placing drink in it which is what may happen with a dual size.

At the end of the day, you do you.

Personally have not used a ton in rails. But most side tables (including mine) that I've used utilize the dual size. As well as most boats/pontoons I've been on.

It just works well. If you have a very specific, nonstandard glass, maybe there is an issue you can run into. I've never seen it personally, but then again I'm not pouring drinks into my kids travel glass with silly straw for people.

My only issue with oversized holders is specific to beers. If they're bottles, too often someone hits the neck while reaching/dealing/etc., resulting in tipping it on its side. Won't spill at all unless it's mostly full, and even then doesn't necessarily spill onto table/rail.

I'd so no wrong way to go, as obviously everyone has differing tastes on this.

I have them on some Triton side tables. Jumbo is the way to go IMO. Most of my guys, when presented with different size cups at the bar, choose the bigger cups, or they are already bringing their own Yeti/Corkcicle or whatever mug with them. The mugs/larger cups don't sit right in the two-stage holder.

I already removed 1/2 in each side table and replaced w/ a jumbo. Left the other one, "just in case" but I have rarely seen anyone choose to use it when they have the option between using it and using the jumbo. That is all the market research I needed...lol.

I had them in one older table and ripped them out after one game, they're one of those kinds of things that sounds like a good idea, but IMHO they don't really work very well in practice. The recess in the bottom fits a bottle/can OK, but because the recess is somewhat rounded, they're not terribly stable. And for larger glasses like rocks glasses, unless the glass is almost as big as the outer cup holder size, those often don't sit flat and kinda wobble around.

Unless you're using only bottles and cans all the time, in which the standard size is best, I always recommend jumbo cup holders to clients. They're deep enough that even a longneck beer bottle won't fully tip over and fall out / spill:

My game has been running for nearly 20 years with jumbo cup holders, never had more than a few drops spill from a bottle in a jumbo cup holder. And that includes 4 meetups with lots of booze lol.

Ok, now you have my interest...

What do you hate about them?
What someone mentioned earlier…

Anything that doesn’t qualify for the “small” portion of the holder is a wipeout waiting to happen.

Even vessels that fit the small area and at risk just getting it in there.

Jumbo for the win. If your players can’t figure it out get them sippy cups.

So the poll results so far show 5 positive, 3 negative and 3 ambivalent responses (along with 2 haters).

From those who have commented (and have actually used Dual Size cups), the sentiment seems to be that they really aren't that great, or that they are the spawn of the devil. There are no positive comments at all (despite the poll results).

My original thinking about them was that they would be great for holding beer bottles securely, while still being able to accommodate "rock glasses" and cups. But from the comments, it seems that they don't necessarily hold cups as stable as Jumbos, and that beer bottles in Jumbos may not be as big a spill hazard as one might think.

Unless a few positive comments show up soon, I'll probably end up going with the Jumbos...
