Soo, there are a few really good group buys happening or are on the brink of happening.

My Dilemma: Do I or should I go for the Dunes CC that apache is running or the CPS cc that might happen. I cant get both as I have and getting the sets below. In either case, I am looking at a small chip set - 300-500 tops (maybe as a travel set)

My chip journey so far:

Majestics - 700 chips bought
Tiki - 500 chips, ordered today
AC Hybrids - once GB opens - approx. 1500-2000 chips (will be my main set)
Iron Bank ceramics by stocky - order when this goes ahead - probably 600-1000 chips

Here's the kicker - I don't host poker that often but if I like something i'll buy it - and will stay in my collection forever lol!

First world problems eh!

What would your advice be?

Save and start planning for a CPC set. Buy any sample sets that are made available to get a sense of spots, molds, colo(u)r combo's and inlays. I'll probably get banned for that logic but if you want an heirloom set, to me that's the way to go. You can order the colo(u)r and mold samples from CPC to get you started. I'll be ordering the hot stamp samples next week. If you really want to go nuts you can order the complete spot pattern set as well.

This is true too, I really do want a CPC set at some stage. Now I just need to find some inspiration for the designs lol.

My best advice would be to get samples if you can and compare them for yourself. But...

If you can only have one and you can't get samples of the older stock in time to compare them, I'd go w/the Dunes from Apache. The Dunes chips have spot progression and are missing the aggressive cross-hatching. My anecdotal obersvation is that more players are okay with China clay chips not having the cross-hatching present (the Dunes chips) vs. those that have it (the Tower & Spear mold chips), so this would be your safer option.

I have a sample of the CPS but not the dunes. I neither like or dislike the cps chips, not sure where to get a sample of the dunes

What denoms do you plan on getting? There are some denoms of the CPS that are stellar (25, 500, 5000)... there are some that are meh... There are some denoms of the Dunes that are nice (like what the $500 is supposedly going to be), there are others that are meh.

Not decided on denoms yet, need to work on it, maybe a tourney set now, all my sets are cash at the moment.

Ohh and to add another contender into the mix, the possible CPC hot stamp tourney set

CPC is another animal, tempting buy small set but have lots of solids Paulson
If Want a CPS tourney in high demons set, PM have one for play final table or One drop only played 1 time

Mixed set - pick the best denoms from each.

I've a single table 500 set of CPS I got in the initial group buy that will literally be used for the first time in a couple of weeks. I was planning to eBay them due to my group playing almost exclusively cash. If you're likely to go down that round and are interested, give me a shout.

I am also considering a China clay set, for travel. To keep the good stuff at home. So my goal is to have a set I can sacrifice...no need to really like it.

Do what I did, immediately go read the 2nd CPS group buy thread under PGI. Check the replies of previous buyers there.

Then ask yourself how many sound happy or even slightly satisfied. And how many sound meh, or sold them after 1 try.

I need a cheap set for travel, so may still consider a used set of these. But tbh I'm not really expecting to like them 1 bit based on most comments.

That's good to know, once I have decided, will definitely give you a shout.

If they're going to stay in your collection forever, then why are you buying entry-level sets that most of us wouldn't look at twice?

You have a point. I suppose until someone point out the obvious, you never really think about it (well I didn't anyway).

ok, I should re-phrase, I would use this as my travel/loaner set - I wouldn't want to loan away my other sets, I like them too much.

this ^^^^^

you have tried the rest, now step up to the best
I will be getting either a Paulson set or a CPC set at some stage in the next year or so - just need to figure out designs/ideas.

When you say "CPS cc that might happen", are talking about the group buy being suggested by PGI? If so, go with the dunes. Reason being is that it's running, rather than just being talked about. Personally, I think the cross hatching on the CPS chips is a design flaw. The hatching is way too deep. I've gotten samples of the dunes and they're very similar, maybe identical, in feel and sound to the Pharaohs CC chips.

Does PGI still offer the great wall chips? If so you might want to get samples of those before you decide. I preferred those, but went with the pharaohs due to spot options.

This ^^ .
@MillyS : ... An option, the PGI Great Walls, with your own custom labels, are nice China Clays, also at a good price, perhaps look into that, & you can get them quickly, vs. the proposed group buys ... They're as good feeling as any other "Compression China Clays " ...
The CPS "crosshatching" people refer to, actually came out as sort of raised micro "dots" on the chip, if you look close, a bit too much, but still nice chips ...
'Back in the day, ( :) ) , I 1st had ordered ( bartered, actually) w/ PGI for 2 different custom labeled sets of the Wall China Clays, then I was also in on the original PGI CClay wall "Private Cardroom" group buy, then other CClay group buys, including the CPS chips, along with getting various Paulsons along the way.....
As far as the China Clays, I still have the wall customs, but sold most of the rest ....
Each China clay group buy seemed to promise the next "even more Paulson Like" look / feeling chip ... & the low prices made it easy to want to get in on them ... ( & they really are a good deal for the price) ... But there never was any incredible "breakthrough" in feel over previous China Clays ...
I "thought" at the time, a full set of BCC & ASM customs were a bit out of my price range, but Looking back, I should have saved my money on the various China Clay group buys... As you know, my Boardwalk Card Club CPC's arrived this week, & I should have done that long ago ...

i would suggest if you have not already done so, buy a few ex-casino paulson chips, or a barrel maybe to see and feel the difference from your present chips...

most see the difference quickly and then the lead gets into your bloodstream and next thing ya know your Visa card is maxed out but own some of the best chips ever made...

or maybe TRK's but fair warning the only way back from the TRK desire is to develop a bad crack habit which the crack habit will save you quite a bit of money vs buying TRKs

seriously, any ex casino paulson set is usually a keeper...try a few would be my suggestion

Unfortunately I agree with this. I hate the way the chips feel as a result of the cross hatching. There are many ABS plastic sets I would rather buy.

I've got casino Paulsons, I love them, got a small collection of Paulson sample sets, they are the holy grail IMO. But then I have never handled TRKs. I can see how you would Would and can spend £££ on them!

I would like something personalised to myself so a CPC set is definately going to happen, but in some time.

my sentimonies exactly. save and go straight to the good stuff if you can.

Decision made.

After reading everyone's comments and also checking out the order form on the Apache website - with shipping to the uk it would cost just under 60c a chip (300 chips), not worth it IMO as I already have majestics. Iam just going to hold off and start thinking about a design for a CPC set.

Deciding to use my majestics as a travel set for now and the bud Jones hybrids as my main until CPC happens (probe be over a year before things get moving)

Thank you all for your comments, experiences and feedback, made me think about the longer term use of my chips.

Now...to start thinking about an idea for my CPC set ............. Tbc
