My girlfriend expressed interest in designing a poker chip set after so much of me talking about it and wanted inlay to be based on her dog. I took an image of him and roughly converted to vector (I will go back and trace it by hand later for the final version) and I just mocked up something really quick. I was looking at it and thinking its maybe a bit simple, not really a lot going on. It would be a tournament set and I just made a quick 25 and threw it on the Tina web mold to get an idea of what it would look like. Looking for feedback on the inlay and to see if any more experienced designers can suggest anything. I think a big problem I'm running into is with the image of the dog so large on the chip there is not a lot of room left for anything else. But also If I make it smaller it then it really does not show well.

Any feedback or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Haha, its not her design, I did it for her. She was just interested in doing the edge spots on some chips and I wanted to make an inlay for her since I know she wont do that herself.

I’m no designer but I really like where you’re going with the design! I love the dog image. IMO it’s a “less is more” kind of situation.

That being said, there are designers on here that have put together sets I couldn’t dream of! I’m sure they’ll have great advice/adjustments for you.

I always feel some patern in the background is better than just white. I just slopped this together as a "for instance". It's just a gray marble pattern.

You could maybe find paw prints to use?

Really nice personal design. I think you could play around with fonts a little, or at least make your existing font bold.
Black may be the best option, but you could play around with the font color as well. I don't know the color of the dog, but if brown, make it brown, instead of black. I love simple designs, but I guess I'm a fan of coloring things up.. sometimes.
I know these are tournament chips. Maybe ridiculous but if I were to use currency symbols, I may try a bone for $ and a puppy footprint for ¢. IF you have a sense of humor.

Thank you all for the advice. I have made some updates,

1. I changed the font, I agree that it was not bold enough and maybe not the correct pick for a poker chip.
2. I increased the denomination font size, hopefully this is large enough.
3. I added a background gradient as a nod to the old school Bellagio chips. Latte is brown so it works here I think.

I think I want to make some additions as well. I like the paw print idea but I don't want currency on the chips. So I will try to add a small paw print on the left and right of his face. Also considering removing he white from his face to be transparent so the background gradient shows through.

Any thoughts on the new design would be greatly appreciated!

I like the dog graphic, especially against the aged background.
I think there’s some issues with the kerning of the type. Some are bunching up like the L and A, and the T and E in Latte’s, while the P and O in Poker look too far apart.
Type on a curve can often do strange things depending on the typeface.

I'd be curious to see a mockup with the dog at the top or in the middle with the denom below.
If you were to shorten the name, could also do dog at top, name on left and then denom on right.
Not a huge fan of the new font, but maybe that's just me.

Good callout on the kerning. I will try to adjust them individually between letters to see if I can solve some of those issues.

Here is a quick re-arrangement to put the dog in the middle. I had him at the bottom originally since part of his neck was in the image and I curved it to be the same as the inlay circle. I thought it was better at the bottom. Though having it in the middle is not so bad. the text curve kind of matches his ear curve. For the name I am kinda stuck with it as Latte's Poker Cafe since she named him Latte because of his color looking like a latte the coffee drink, and she loves coffee. I thought about changing it to just Latte's Cafe but then she is worried about it not having anything to do with poker. I will play with some more layouts though.

You might also try all caps, it might even out the look of the typeface especially along the top outer edge.

I do think dog in the middle makes it a little easier to work with the denoms, especially as they get higher

I tried all caps here. I did play with some spacing on specific letters, even in all caps it was not correct. I will need to do some more work on the spacing though. Here are both dog at bottom and in middle with 5000 on there. that will probably be the largest denom I will have. I know the chip is wrong but just for the example. I am leaning more towards dog in middle the more I see it. What are the thoughts on all caps vs camel case?

I think i prefer all caps. Definitely prefer the denom at the bottom
Second!

I also designed something very very similar (see my showcase or profile pic). I love your latest mockup with the denom on the bottom.

if your going for a rugged retro look maybe have a giant pawprint in the background to kind of resemble a coffee cup stain? Might be interesting to play around with.

Have you considered moving the graphic to the top and running the type straight and in the middle? You could even treat the type almost as a logo and it would be large enough that you could use any typeface you like:

I really like something like this! I might play around with a logo design like that :) It definitely looks a lot more like a cafe logo which fits really well with his name. I do actually have his left and right paw print. I cleaned them up a bit and put them on the left and right of the chip. I am going to try one design where I pick on of them and make it faded in the background to see how that looks.

Love this one, also the fact that it gets rid of all the round text kerning issues that are a pain at times. And the first thing you see is the dog face instead of your eye wandering around the text at the top.

Ok It is way better with the more of a cafe logo in the center and having his face above it. I tried playing around with putting his paw prints in the background but I think it might be making it a bit too busy... It looks good at this larger size but when its 39mm it can get a bit much maybe.

She did a first pass on edge spot designs, Still not happy with some of them but here is a rough v1 with the feedback from this thread. She used CPC design tool and I just took the hex values from that builder and put them into illustrator.

This has been super educational for me in designing inlays and I can not wait to do another project, I mean that may be premature as I am probably still not done with this one haha. Still trying to see if I can work his paw print(s) into the design or if I want to keep it more simple. This is making me with there was a way to get a sample set printed from Tina, would be super cool to have one of each in hand.

@Colquhoun 's idea was fantastic. Don't forget, you can also use the Paulson poker chip design tool here for edge spots. That may give you even more possibilities. Looking Good! Good Luck with your project!

There's also the option of doing a different label on the other side of the chip, there you could incorporate the paw.

Hey this is looking so much better, great choices with the edge spots too! I am always partial to the curved upper text, but the centered Latte’s is look great.

I personally like the paw prints in the background. It adds character but is light enough not to intrude on the overall inlay. And I love the dog's face.
