Alright I have searched and read a ton of threads on here before I created this thread. I started over on chip tall last week and then I ran across a post that said to come over here so I started looking around here Friday. On to the question.

So I am going to start hosting a bi weekly home game. I have played poker a good bit through the years but mainly at casinos and a very rare home game. I am wanting some chips to use and I want to go with something decent. I would love to have a set of Paulson but I don't want to make the investment to start with. I would like to buy a set that I can continue growing and use for a cash game or tournament structure. From what I have read I need to buy 500 chips to start with but please tell me if I am wrong. I want enough that I can play with 10 players. What chips should I look at and how many of what denominations. Thanks in advance.

If you provide us with stakes and buyin you will be looking at spreading that will help everyone provide you with a good start!

Welcome aboard!

Welcome!

I think you could survive with 300 chips. There will be a lot of change made and a few awkward moments but the game should run without any big problems.

Many of us seem to think less than 300 chips for each denomination is rough. You would think I am a little crazy if you looked at what I think makes up a proper sized set (1,000 chips to start, with more being better), but we don't strictly need that many.

No reason not to post some starter porn:

This is a "reasonable" set

This is a "traveling" set

Good to have you here. Kiss your wallet good bye -=- DrStrange

Stakes will defiantly be small ATM. I am sure in tournament format we will probably do a 50 buck buy in and in cash games it will probably be small stakes. Most of the guys will not want to be putting more than 100 bucks on the line.

Mixing tournament chips and cash chips leads to potential trouble. Don't let a T25 chip become a $25 chip over the course of the night.

Things happen, take preventative measures even if it means using dice chips. (Ewwww I can't believe I just wrote that)

I assume small Atm you mean a $1/$1 or a $1/$2. The amount of chips will differ from that and say a .25/.50 games.

My regular game which is a$25/.50 plays small. I can get by with 100-.25, 200-$1 and 40 to 60- $5 chips. Mine plays smaller than some. I was hosting a $1/$2 game that required many more chips. I had to have a large bank for that. Darn I miss that game!
For the tourney set I would make sure you get your info from our resident tourney master @BGinGA. He is considered by most, the tournament guru, master and God.

I will also add get samples and do two different sets to prevent tourney chips being cashed in for cash chips.

Get 300 cash chips and 300 tourney chips.

Consider China clays or the Borgata ceramic tribute group buy for your best bang for the buck.

Depends on your stakes. @BGinGA is king of tourney breakdowns. Let us know your cas game stakes and we can help there. .05/10? .25/.50? .10/.25? .50/1?

Sounds like $1000 total bank will do the trick. once we know the stakes we can get you set up with a good cash breakdown.

Most likely .25/.50 and .50/1.00 will be what we play. We won't be playing any lower denominations than quarters.

100 x .25
100 x 1
80 x 5
20 x 25

Total bank 1025.

Won't be as luxurious as a 500 chip set, but will get you started for sure.

I agree with this but I would bump it up with at least 100 more 1's. The $1's will be your workhorse chip. In my 25/50 game I have never broken out a $25 chip but it could happen in the 50/$1 game. More $1's

Maybe I misunderstood the goal. I agree 100 more 1s is ideal, but I thought he was looking for a minimal starter set to host both cash games and tourneys.

My regular .05/.10 $20 buy in game sees $20 chips in play on occasion.

You are exactly right Rob. Can you steer me in the direction of a decent set of chips to get started with?

Also I couldn't find either of these groups buys to look at the chips.

Those 2 sets linked are totally your best low cost/decent quality options. Whichever one fits your budget would be a good choice.

This looks pretty cheap are the clay chips or what? I just don't understand how they are that cheap. I really like the ones in the group buy but I don't understand how it works.
Yeah they are clay chips..but they are made in China! From what I have looked at they could have some minor defects, but overall should work for a home game. There are varying opinions on cc, but I always go back to well better than Dice chips right?

The China clay chips are injection molded plastic chips with some minerals added to the plastic to improve feel and sound. They are probably the best bang for the buck going. Not the nicest, but the entry level of a decent performance chip.

The group buy is a ceramic hybrid. This is a casino grade chip. Just start following that thread. They are still finalizing design details, and will soon be taking orders. This is probably your best price option for a casino grade chip.

I really like those chips alot. I think I am going to order the Dunes chips just to get started and probably build a nice tournament set up out of the group buy chips.

Since these are so cheap, and you might be able to afford it, consider adding an extra 100 $1s to the order. $80 for a nice playable set is a great deal.

Here is the borgata group buy

http://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/bud-jones-style-hybrid-chips.10994/

China Clays are a type of chip, sold by a few vendors on the site. Apache and palm imports are the two that come to mind but I may have missed others.
Keep in mind that as of now this is a one time group buy and you won't be able to add on later unless you catch somone selling their set. So get what you want and if you think you'll grow, get what you think you'll need in the future also
