Sorry guys, I know I've spammed a few threads, but this should be the last question [until my next one].

I created a poker room with a max of 8 players in mind. I have a 60" round table, 8 padded poker chairs etc.

I have 8 players confirmed for my first game, and last night someone that didn't initially respond asked if there is still a seat. He'd be the 9th.

Running two tables is not an option, so the way I see it I have the following options:

1) tell him to come over. maybe someone bails at the last minute, or someone leaves early. worst case we squeeze him in on a folding chair as a 9th player.
2) tell him he's welcome to come, and he's first on the waitlist. have pizza, watch tv, etc until someone is out
3) tell him the game is full
4) he lives in town, so tell him I can text him if someone busts early and he has the option to come over then and take the seat

I'm leaning towards 1, but what the the PCF community do? And in general, how do you guys handle waitlist for a single table cash game?

I would ask him, welcome to come over and eat, check it out, or I can text you when a seat opens up.

I would explain you only invite for open seats and once you get a yes, its spoken for, it will help weed through ppl that will come and value the seat. I would not put a 9th in on a round table

Thank you. Have you ever seen a waitlist in any of the cash games you've played in? If so, how do they work?

Well ... that depends ...

They run just like a casino typically, excluding player card level.

So if there is a rake, its first come first serve, who ever is there in person first gets the seat at the time it opens.

In a non raked invite game, it would go to who is on the wait list first typically, but if 2nd on the list shows up and has been waiting, I'd likely let them in the game when a seat opens up

At my monthly game, I usually end up with a wait list and if someone bails before game time I offer the seat to the first person on the list (via text), if they don't want it I go down the list until the seat is filled. Same process if someone leaves the game early.

Typically - As the Host, I sit out, let the player fill my seat. (I think that is the Gentleman thing to do, although as they say, your milage may vary) as long as your table and chairs can only fit 8 players comfortably - or if you can get 9 seated comfortably - ask the group if they mind 9 players.

Enjoy the atmosphere and evening you had assembled and play the part of attentive host.

It does not happen often. This being your first - someone might bail, and you still get to play,

This makes a lot of sense, but you are a better man than me! I've been looking forward to this all week, and need to play in my first game.

First off, good problem to have.

Second, I'd just be upfront with the player and give him the options. Tell him he's #9 to respond and then offer him the choices. Either he can 1) come hang out and he gets the first seat when someone bails (or, if everyone at the table agrees, you can squeeze him, but that may be a longshot) or 2) you'll text him if someone drops out/leaves early.

Just let him know the deal and let him pick what he wants to do.

When playing cash I've had everyone sit out 30mins in rotation to fit a 9th on my strictly 8max table. If all in agreement this can work - watch a bit of tv, eat, go for a smoke, stretch your legs etc - 30mins goes in no time. We did this to accomodate a friend to all who was visiting from out of town at fairly short notice. Didn't even get to do a full sitout rotation as someone needed to leave anyway after 3-4 hours.

Anything but 1.

waaaaay back in the day, we had a game on an octagon. one night the host miscounted and we had 9 show, so he grabbed one of those shitty old-school square card tables and created an appendage. we drew cards, and lowest 2 had to sit awkwardly at the appendage corners until someone busted. we had an awesome night, and still reminisce about it fondly.

I’d consider implementing something to help manage expectations for this and future games.

For example: I invite more than a table of players. (Target 6, can squeeze in 7.) As I get close to filling up, I let everyone know and then notify everyone when I’ve hit my limit and have started a waitlist. Knowing there’s a waitlist, folks that previously accepted have been quicker to let me know if they can’t make it or that they need to leave early so I can dip into the waitlist.

I do love the dedicated dealer suggestion, assuming they can shuffle/deal.

I'll def do this going forward. I honestly didn't even think we'd fill up, but the added sense of urgency doesn't hurt. If there was space at the table for him to deal, then I'd just assume let him play. Unless you guys know something I don't- like making your dealers stand and throw the cards in air to the table of 8 lol

I would not squeeze him in. Explain that the table seats 8 and is full but you will let him know if there is a last minute cancellation. This lets him know he needs to lock up a seat ASAP next time if he wants to play. Squeezing lets him (and the others) think that RSVPing is not important.

You don’t want to have 6 people be a maybe/last minute decision if they will play. Because eventually you will be sitting with 3 people at the table and no game.
