First I want to say that ABC Gifts and Awards was awesome to work with. Great customer service. I wanted some custom $25 and $100 chips for a cash game I'm having this Saturday so I contacted ABC a few weeks ago to see if I could get an order in time. They got back to me right away and helped me with my design and I received my order in less than 3 weeks!

Ok, next I'll say that I rushed on this design obviously. I'm probably going to make some changes and re-order along with $1 and $5 chips but I'm impatient and really wanted these for the game this weekend. But I'm still very happy with them.

The design concept is an homage to my grandfather who flew bombers in World War II in the 8th Air Force. The symbol at the top and bottom of the chips is part of their shield (that definitely needs to be redesigned to show up better ). Also I'm going to change the bombs along the edge to show up better for version 2.

Nice tribute to your grandpa and to all those who fought for freedom.
I remember my dad telling me how exuberant with joy everybody was in his village in the mountains of (Nazi-occupied at the time) northwestern Greece (Epirus) in August 1943, at the sight of hundreds of USAAF B-24 Liberators on their way to Ploiesti. They knew freedom was getting close.
Kids of his age particularly liked the funny-looking twin-fuselage P-38 long-range escorts.:)
I see you have something close to the B-29 (I 'm afraid so, which is not historically correct regarding the 8th Air Force) on your labels, so maybe it's worth including the B-17, B-24, as well as the P-38 and P-51 escort fighters on your next denominations.

First to the OP, nice chips. I like the really like the theme and have been wanting to get some ceramics myself for a long time. It’s actually why I originally joined this forum.

To @Coyote funny you mention the B29s. It’s actually the first thing I thought when I saw them after the 8th AF was mentioned. My Grandfather as well as my Great Uncle served in the 8th and my Grandfather was on the Ploiesti raid. He was a flight engineer on a B-24 that turned around after they lost two engines shortly after takeoff due to all the dust that was kicked up! My Uncle was a bombardier on a B17 and was wounded twice before being sent home. In 1944 my grandfather transferred to a unit in the US that was training on B29s to be deployed in the South Pacific. He went to Tinian in 1945 and finished out the war there.

But you are correct, B29s are not really appropriate for the 8th and European theatre. I like your idea of using several different planes for different denominations. But for heavy bombers, b24s and 17s are accurate.

Just 2 denoms on this run? 500/1000 to come later?

I rushed this order for a cash game I'm having Saturday, $1/$2 no limit, and I only had these designs ready and didn't want to wait because I was on a time crunch. We usually play 25c/50c so I have a few sets of other chips ranging from 0.25 - 5.00, but nothing above a $10 chip at the moment. But now that I'm thinking about it I might make this strictly a tournament set after Saturday. So 500/1000/5000 are my next order.

Thanks! My favorite story that my grandfather told me was when he flew the chowhound missions near the end of the war. I really appreciate your feedback, truth is b/c I was on a rush with this I used an image I found in a google search ( I used the "Licensed for reuse with modification" tool to make sure there were no copyright issues ). I'll definitely work on redoing the chip using the actual planes that he flew. I also like the idea of using different planes for different denominations.

Wow what a cool execution and use of ceramics. Where's the lower denom chips?

We usually play .25/.50 , I have several sets ranging from $0.05 - $10.00. Nile Club, Monte Carlo and Casino Royale from Apache mostly. So I already have plenty of $1 and $5 chips, just needed some $25's for the higher limit game and will use some $100 for rebuys

I looked for some line art but couldn’t find much for a b24 and b17. These were the best in a quick search.

Do you know the name of his plane? Some of them were pretty crazy. My Grandfathers B24 was named “Hells-a-droppin’” but in his bomber group was a “Jersey Bounce” (nose art had a girl with huge boobs) and a “Strawberry Bitch” (nose art had a redhead) among others :p The most ridiculous name...I attached below...

Might be something to incorporate if you can’t find out. Maybe even the nose art.

thanks! That middle one might do nicely

That one does look the best for artwork considerations. However you should try to find what type of plane your Grandfather was on if you are only going to use one. Both of those were very common but I think there were slightly more B 24s made than B 17s

A quick google of Operation Chowhound shows that it was a humanitarian food drop mission very late in the war. You could research what units were in that if you don’t have your GFs info and determine the planes used. I think B17s were more common as the war progressed but were also there in the beginning. Both my releatives joined prior to Pearl Harbor and both were in 24s and 17s.

You got me thinking of doing a similar theme. I have a little area of my bar/poker room dedicated to my GF and Uncle.

On top, the B-25 Mitchell: Only USAAF aircraft to ever operate from a US Navy carrier (USS Hornet, for the 1942 raid on Tokyo)

Anyway, my reason for posting these is that they're my photos and you're welcome to use then if you wish.

This has no application for your chip project but thought I would share based on our common interest ....this is my grandfathers squadron pic from 1942. 329th SQ of the 93rd BG. My Grandfather is the dark haired guy sitting on the left engine (left side of the photo)first from the cockpit.

Very cool. An idea would be to add more bombs to the higher denom chips and fewer to the low denom chips. I really like the fiver... great colors.
