I wanted to build a tournament set that will scale to 10 players. Typical game is 5-6 but we can get 8-10 on occasion. trying to use the Poker Chip Calc but my head hurts lol

we play NL tourney games almost exclusively, $20-$100 buy in depending who is playing and let it roll, sometimes with 1-2 rebuys, so that will need to be considered

currently i have a 400pc set, generic set that works for 6p games
for larger 8-10p games currently we use two generic set with no denom's on it so we just count blah blah, but now with a proper set, I want to give each player a set amount in denom's, go from there and using the color up as needed.

Unfortunately it looks like having a 10p tourney count is going to lead to a fat 1000+ chip collection and spend more than I anticipated off the start.

I may have to pair down to the more usable 6 player game set and just keep the cheapo sets for the bigger games until i can afford to increase my count.

But that is where you guys come in, in your experience and knowledge can you share some insights on how many chips i should go with to start off and in what configurations?

presently looking at the Milano and Majestic sets from Apache but totally open to any suggestion
budget is around $200 USD

Since you're looking to start a new home game, I'd recommend looking at the Tournament and Cash Game sub-forum for good info to get you off the ground. Here's a good thread that addresses your exact situation. Bottom line is that you don't need 1000 chips to do a 10 man tourney. We love chips, and having chips on the table, but there is some point where too many chips slows down the progress of the game. Check out the thread for some solid advice from respected members.

So really you are looking at 500-600 chips at these prices to stay on budget, I think you could squeeze out a decent set here.

It might help if you had an idea of the structure you were going to use.

If you are thinking base T25 I would do something like this for 500 chips.

150 T25,
200 T100,
100 T500
50 T1000

This would give you 11 starting stacks of

12 * T25 = T300 (18 left over)
17 * T100 = T1700 (13 left over)
6 * T500 = T3000 (34 left over)

This gives everyone T5000 to start, and you can probably squeeze 1 more "spare parts" stack out of the leftovers.

You can also use the leftover T500 and T1000 chips to adjust stacks upward to T8000 or T10000.

But I don't think you NEED to go with 1000 chips for a 10 player tournament.

If you're a realist, there's really no need to have 1000 chips for just a 10 player tournament.

This is pretty much the motto for many of us on PCF. ;) If you're a poker chip and PCF addict, then you will tell yourself you 'need' 1000 chips. Who am I to tell you to buy fewer chips?

400 to 600 chips is plenty for a 10 person tournament. An 800-1000 chip set can work for 20 players.

I've played in a single table tourney that give out stacks of only 23 chips (T10000) per player to start (8/8/4/2/1 breakdown) and it works, although i'd prefer 5-T1000 chips to the 1-T5000 chip in the starting stack. Some people prefer more chips than that start, maybe upwards of 40 chips per player. Allow for # of chips for starting stacks + additional higher denom chips for rebuys and color-ups.

Some common chip breakdowns for T10000 starting stacks are:
(T25/T100/T500/T1000 denoms)
8/8/4/7 = 27 chips
8/8/6/6 = 28 chips
12/12/5/6 = 35 chips
12/12/7/5 = 36 chips

thanks for the suggestions, see, this is where i could not make sense of the poker chip calc and I was running my chip count up real high. I wanted to allow for rebuys and color ups as well. looks like a 600pc set will get the job done and that will come in "just over" budget which of course is fiiiiiiiiiine, right wifey? :D

I copied this form someone here a while back. 10 person, 360 chips
