We bought a cheapo rug off of Wayfair before the poker table and chairs (with hard plastic wheels) came in. The rug needs to go regardless because it's pretty thick (not great for the wheels), but the bigger issue is that it won't stop shedding. The basement is filled with rug fuzz, which I thought it would be a temporary issue, but it's been a year with no end in sight.

The question is, what do I do without a rug? I'm worried about the plastic wheels scratching the tile over time, so it looks like my choices are:

  • no rug; upgrade the wheels to rollerblade type wheels. Easier to move the chairs and less (maybe no) wear and tear on the tile. this is probably the most expensive option as well
  • get a new flat/no pile rug and keep the wheels
  • buy one of those plastic desk mats, but not sure if they come large enough. Either place it directly on top of the tile, or on top of a thin rug
Anyone navigate this or play in a room with tile? What seems to be working?

This is a 60" btw.

It’s tile? Unless those wheels are made out of diamond edged blades and your guys do nothing but roll around nonstop I’m not sure if the floor is in jeopardy. The wheel upgrade seems reasonable. Never heard of such a thing and it sounds expense and time consuming. Does the table stay up all the time? Maybe a large, non sheddy rug entity for the chairs to do their thing on…

Even really nice rugs will shed (and continue to shed) depending on the type of pile and fiber used. If you replace your current rug with something looped instead of cut, you should have more luck.

Or if you want to go rogue, I can tell you from experience that having your kiddo dump a bottle of glue on it and then not tell you for hours, that will keep the carpet from shedding ever again

Ha, I like it. We got the high pile rug because originally the little one was playing on it with his toys. Definitely been there with the spills!

I suggest just going for the wheel upgrade. @MegaTon44 has these in his poker room and they are great. I recently upgraded my office a bit and now have them on my office chair..still great.
^^this, the non-marring wheels are great. Just warn folks the chairs will run on you if you're paying attention. I may or may not have bought it on more than one occasion at Dan's meet-ups.

Old fashioneds may have been involved in the above.....

That’s crazy cheap for a rug!! My wool one under the poker table in the basement took some water damage when our dishwasher leaked without our knowledge. Do you feel like it would be enough to keep a chip from being damaged if it hit the concrete?

Yes I think the chip would be fine. You could also put a pad under it if you wanted more cushion..

The only thing I would recommend is either an industrial rug, or engineered wood flooring which is really quite robust.

My table has a temporary setup in the garage, fold away when not in use. I got a relatively cheap outdoor rug since my home depot chairs would likely mark up the epoxy floor (I made the mistake of going cheap for the epoxy and regret it).

Style wise in retrospect probably should’ve went for another option, but functionally for me should work. It’s relatively thin and nothing to pile. Maybe have a look at outdoor options, size wise I went for 8’ 10 x 12’

Actually take back my ‘relatively cheap’ rug comment after clicking on @Tonysquander link. I was ROBBED…!

GL and let us know what you end up doing

I think the first click is for a 5x8 so you have to adjust the size to see the price for the larger ones.
