I think fracs are great and they are some of the best additions to many a chip set.
Fracs made more sense to make more of them back in the day, when limits were less and the dollar had more value. I’ve found some old ones in playable numbers but they aren’t easy to find sense most are 40+ years old.
There seems to be quite a few personal chips out there in frac value like my JH chip. They just don’t seem to pop up in larger, playable quantities.
That’s why you see a lot of custom fracs in sets. People gotta make them to get what they want.
Some people like to use T25’s like the Fun Nites for fracs.
Sometimes you can get lucky on some fracs. My Golden Gate fracs are my favs. The color works with white and blue $1,s and red or yellow $5’s. They are super vintage and athe house mold is great. I kinda overpaid for them so maybe that is why they are my favorites.
From looking at ChipGuide and other places it seems like a lot of places in rural areas, or somewhere in bfe Montana, used a lot of fracs. More likely than not they were really small rooms and had to offer smaller limits to accommodate for the lower income in the rural areas.
My Heritage Inn set is from Great Falls, MO and the set came with 4 different fracs. I’ve seen this in the PNW States on ChipGuide.
There are certain written and unwritten rules about building sets.
You can use a solid chip with an edge spot set if it’s a frac.
Non-denoms are frowned upon but you can use one with a denominated set as long as the colors work.
Not very popular to mix molds together but if it’s only the frac, and it’s cool a cool chip, it is acceptable.
Fracs are a fun way to add some personality to your set. Favorite color or a certain chip you can mill or murder to make your set work. It adds more ownership to the set beyond just purchasing it and getting it on the felt. IMO..
