Sadly, and to my utter frustration, my most recent set of Paulsons will go up for sale. Unless I win the lottery, this will have been my last REAL clay chip set. At least I've owned sets from TRK, Paulson, BCC and ASM. Nice to say I've owned them - would be nicer to say I HAVE them. :)
I've been a chip-a-holic for many years, like many of you here. I acquire chips because I LOVE THEM. The history, the quality and nature of manufacture, etc. (you all know the reasons).
Over the years I have spent a LOT of money putting together quality sets for my poker crew to use. However, it is apparent that many "non-chip nuts" don't really appreciate the chips or the expense involved.
Therefore, I'm going back to China Clays. The sprint mold chips: the first CC type I ever bought years ago and (IMO) the best quality CC's too.
I've searched and searched for a quality "cheap option" for chips and I just can't do better than the CC's. I've looked at (and previously owned) many other types but being a chip nut I can't settle for less than the CC's. Yes, I've seen the Majestics, owned: Milanos, PGI great walls, Pharoah's, Dunes. All good chips, but not as good (IMO) as the sprint mold chips. The sprint mold chips are the only CC's I've had that have edge spots that go all the way through the chip.
There are other options in the "cheap" category but none fit the bill.

I can't sell anything until I have a playable set in my hands so soon after these are delivered I'll be listing for sale here in the classifieds:

104 Discovery Cruise blue $1's in excellent cond.
104 CVB pink $2 hot stamped that have been center drilled, in otherwise excellent cond. + 4 more used extras.
104 Casablanca Casino Aruba red $5 in excellent cond.
360 Casablanca Casino Aruba gray $100 in slightly used cond.
20 Emerald Princess yellow 2.50 in mint cond.
4 Eddie's Fabulous 50's black $100 in excellent cond.

ALL of the above chips can stand on edge. Prices and pictures forthcoming. If you see something here that you want badly, PM me.

Nothing wrong with china clays. They can be fun as you don't really stress about how people are handling them. Good luck with your hunt.

Im looking for a set of China Clays also. My guys do appreciate the nice chips but with the recent sudden increase in value I do not like to travel with them, and am a little overprotective with new guys. I dont own a set of dunes or anything but ever Par-A-Dice have climbed out of my price range.

Link to sprint mold chips?

I'm curious ... can you elaborate?
Why base the chipset(s) you use, on the "care-less about the chip players", that may be in you game? It would seem that you are saying you need to sell your "good" chips, simply because other players in your game don't care/know about those chips...
Many of us would not have our "good" chip sets, if we based our own sets on the knowledge or appreciation of other players in the game .. I wish everyone I play with locally was a chipaholic, but in actuality only 2 others are into or aware of what "good chips " are.. 1 is a board member here ...

Right. Most importantly, I don't base my prized chips on what others think. Over the years I've taken time to share my "hobby" with the crew that use the chips. They are well aware of what they mean to me. If it's not their cup of tea, fine. I just don't see the use in having all the investment in these chips on the table for guys who don't appreciate them. They could be using dice chips for all they care. A lot of the guys are way more financially successful than I. I host all the games, provide all the equipment, etc. and gladly so. BUT: I'm thinking I can't play poker ALONE. The chips can only be used and enjoyed with the crew. So I'm going to economize. That's pretty much it. Like I said, if I win the lottery, I'll get another set. Maybe CPC customs :)

Interesting mindset. I was wondering the same as Blaster. My group is similar to yours, King. Most of them are more wealthy than me. Only one or two could give half a rat's arse about quality chips. In fact, I've been told they don't care and would be happy with dice chips. That was in response to a comment I once made about spending lots of money on clays. (I think I was on a losing streak and very drunk, rambling rubbish along the lines of "dump some pots to me, you bastards" :P)

But I will still keep my quality chips... For me. I don't care if I'm the only person at the table who is enjoying the chips during play. It's my choice to invest in them. As it is your choice to sell yours and downgrade. I just hope you don't regret it :)

i understand, i have been on a chip reduction after i got the CPS china group buy cash set....i use it almost exclusively for all poker i play, easy and not worried about em

i could see myself one day unloading all the others maybe but the thrill is not gone completely...

So if one was to want to go the china clay (cc) path for cheaper chips, the only way to do custom cc is to order already designed ones and relabel it? No place designs custom chip for you? Just wondering

You can do full customs, but the minimum order is tens of thousands of chips to make it cost effective. Plus a lot of time working with them to get the colors right.

China clays? Yes. You can buy blanks (as I did for some), you can buy chips peel off the old label and re-label, or you can have a custom set made on their available chips. I believe PGI does this and chipsandgames.com does it. Those are just two that I know of. I think you're probably looking at .75 per chip though.

i paid 12 cents for a laminated label from pgi (pcf member price).

Labels 24 cents per chip, majestics 34 cents (add on order), each 58 cents a chip.

Felt i got off easy.

25c per chip for CPS chips, 15c/label or 30c/chip for gear labels (if/when I order them) = 55c per chip total cost.

Yeah, I'll probably not want to go over 70ish cent/chip .. up to $1 if its really necessary but prefer not too.. i ordered most of the sampels and waiting to come from CPC.. I think i'm looking at cc's right now or ceramic for a starting set.. full clay customize might go more than i would want to spend for a first custom set..the mold design is minimum, being able to customize the spotted edges to match my chip color liking is huge.. as for how the inlay is placed on, it wouldn't matter what type as long as I can get my own logo on it so people know its mine :D I hate playing any games short handed and a lot of my friends like to stack towers so i would be looking at a 1000 chip set for my first order :D

Have you looked at the ceramic hybrid group buy in progress? There are samples being shared right now. You might want to check that thread and get in line for the samples.

I'm venturing into this territory too. We've played with dice chips since my poker group has been in existence. I've been working on moving up to a full 1000 piece Majestic CC tourney and cash set for the group. It will class the game up, give a more real experience, eliminate the use of the same chips in both formats, and finally no one will ever ask again..."how much are the blues worth??" Ugh.

Anyway, I made a subtle announcement during the last game that this would probably be the last time we would be playing with these chips. I was waiting for the response and I got it, "what's wrong with the chips that we have?" I looked at my friend and said let me explain it this way, "some people like boats and some people like chips". (He owns a big boat) He looked at me and said "you don't have to say anything more."

I know at least one player that's really going to appreciate them but going to be interesting to see what everyone says. I know they're only China clays but I'm not going to tell anybody how much I spent on them.

I thought about buying a really nice set of casino chips but not many in that game would appreciate them at all... and I can't imagine how stressed I would be playing with expensive chips. We'll see how the China clays go.

I don't understand how can you damage chips unless you are trying to, I just played for the first time with my recently acquired Paulson set and had a blast, Just one of my buddies cares about chips and owns a set, the rest have no clue about chips. The worst than can happen they get a little dirty thats it. Life is too short to not enjoy the little things that make you happy! Enjoy your chips!!

I'm with you, Joe. There's people here who seriously stress over their chips getting damaged - they'll only use certain sets occasionally and only with the "good" crowd, some people won't let anybody shuffle their chips. I understand the concern over such expensive collectibles, but to me, if I can't have fun with them, they're worthless.
