Golf Scramble (1 Viewer)

Has anyone here been involved with running a golf scramble for 15+ teams?

We are having one for the hockey team I coach and I'm looking for suggestions on anything and everything!
I used to run a once a month golf league where we would do scrambles a few times a year, and work scramble tournaments. Happy to chat over PM. Let me know what you already know and what questions you have.

This is what I've come up with so far for reference:

putting contest

We will have to decide on the following:
hole in one prizes - TBD
possible prizes for the above contests
prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd (gift cards, rounds of golf, etc)
multiple flights based on amount of teams registered. 2 or 3 flights most likely.
giveaway bag items - commemorative t-shirts, golf tees, crackers/slim jims/granola bars, other items from sponsors?
catering
drinks (providing any or not)
mulligan/red tee packages (usually $20 per player, most will buy) can also make this a requirement to be eligible for putting and long drive contest

Overall, advice would be don't create cost or complication that won't provide sufficient benefit.

You planning on messing with handicaps/net scores or no? planning on addressing that through flights? In my experience that's hard to do competitively. Would recommend just asking for handicaps, and using the 20A/15B/10C/5D method for calculating a group handicap.

Is this mainly a fundraiser? Would limit expenses then accordingly - e.g. prizes, some courses (may be regional) will provide some prizes if you ask (e.g. the free rounds, putter, etc.), trophies may be enough.

Pricing is hard to judge - regional, and depends highly on the quality of the course. If this is a top notch course and a regular tournament, looks ok. If this is a first time event and a mediocre or worse course and event that doesn't have a track record with past sponsors, those mid levels might be a little high.

Hole in one prizes are generally insured and a pain in the ass to set up accordingly for something that generally doesn't get people excited.

Mulligans are a good extra fundraiser, as is (used to be the "Tiger" drive, I guess now it's the "Bryson" drive?) where you set them up like 350 yards down the fairway on a longer par 5.

Some side events are going to be more pain in the ass and distraction than quick money maker. Putting contest is in that bucket. Raffles can work, but depend on the laws in your area.

Not messing with handicaps or anything like that.

Most charity scrambles down here just a first flight and about halfway down cut down to a second flight. Prizes are usually in the form of a gift card to the clubhouse or free rounds of golf. The course will be providing some depending on the amount of players we have. I wouldn't expect more than $100, $75, $50 value for the prizes per player per flight.

We are expecting 20+ teams at $100 a person. Course takes $45, figure another $20 or so for misc expenses per player and leaves us about $35 per player profit.

The course is the nicest public course in the area so no issues there.

The tee-shot is an idea I didn't think about. We had one I played in that it cost your team $20 to "tee off" from the moved up spot.

I don't think the putting contest is too much of an issue and it's pretty standard down here for charity scrambles. As you come off 18, each player gets one long putt attempt on the practice green and the closest at the end of the day takes home the prize.

I’ve also played in one where there was a silent auction. Where you could see items before the round in the clubhouse and bid through an app, that would send notifications to bidders when they’ve been outbid, or show the latest bid. So people could bid on items even when they’re playing.

Another one allowed sponsors to set up a canopy tent at the tee boxes where they could tell about themselves/their company. They would also provide the drinks at the tents.

One had a guy that built a ‘golf ball cannon’ (think potato gun) powered by compressed air that you could shoot your golf ball from the tee box if you paid a fee. Most people paid and did it..cause, when else can you shoot a golf ball out of a cannon.

I think we are going to have some auction items but I doubt they will be any big items. Just whatever we can get donated from local businesses.

I have to check with the course, but I believe sponsors will be allowed to set up a table/tent at the course.

I did a baseball one where you got to hit a golf ball off a tee with a baseball bat and that is where you tee'd off from.

I play in a ton of these each year and also coordinate one for my charity. Ours is pretty successful, considering we're a small shop. PM me if you wanna chat :cool

Team ball

Every 4 ball gets a ball for their team (usually a yellow ball if they’re all using white balls). Two of them have to play 4 holes with the team ball and the other two have to play 5 holes. The team completes a scorecard for their team ball. Best net score with the team ball wins. If they lose their team ball at any point then they’re disqualified.

So they use their own golf ball on 14 holes and the team ball on the other 4 holes. The scores each player scores with the team ball goes on their own individual scorecard as well as the team ball score card.

Best I ever did was hitting the team ball out of bounds on the first tee. I was popular that day  :ROFLMAO:

What do you mean by flights? You are expecting more than 36-40 teams?

How many Par 5s are on the course?

I’d scrap Mulligans and do Skins. Skins are a huge draw factor.

Let's say you have 10 teams and they finish
-12
-11
-11
-9
-6
-5
-4
-1
E
+1

If you did two flights the -12, -11, and -11 would be 1, 2, and 3 in flight 1. -5, -4, and -1 would be 1, 2, and 3 in flight 2. Obviously with only 10 teams there would be only one flight but I'd expect we end up with over 20 teams so we will have 2 flights at least.

There are 4 Par 5's.

Mulligans are more for raising money. We are doing this to raise money for our hockey program.

What’s a flight? Never heard that expression before.

You can also do a “nearest the centre” on a relatively flat hole. You paint a line down the centre of the fairway and the closest drive to the line wins.

Chipping contest. Have two rings round a hole on the chipping green. If you stop the ball inside the larger ring it’s 1 point. Inside the smaller ring is 3 points. In the hole is 5 points. Each player gets 3 attempts from 60 yards away. Prize for best team and best individual.
