Hello and welcome to PCF!!! There are a few questions to ask you before knowing what type of chips might work best for your home game.

Do you play cash games or tournaments? What is your budget for a set? How many players will be in your games?

Thank You!! I would like to get a set for a max of $500 that could be used for both tournaments/sit n go's and cash. Cash stakes would be probably be starting off at .25 / .50. Most likely would have a max of 1 table, so not more than 9-10 players. Guessing getting blank chips would be easiest so I could change the value depending on what we are playing but didn't know if there was any other recommendations to go about this. Thinking I could maybe get a set of tournament chips and essentially divide the value by 100 if playing cash. So a 100 chip would be a $1 chip. Is this common?

Welcome!

In general, most people suggest not to have a set that doubles for both tournaments and cash. This prevents any chance people could pull some chips from the tournament and cash them in later got a higher value. Probably uncommon, but it can happen and is easy to avoid.

You can always just do this anyway, but also consider you'll need more chips in a cash set compared to a tournament set

For a single table, you can build a very robust tournament set with about 400 chips.

For cash, you'll likely want to be closer to 600+ depending on the stakes you play and how often you change stakes.

These breakdowns aren't symmetrical so if you do try to combine, you'll need the 600ish cash break down plus another 1-2 racks of high denoms for tournaments.
