Hello there, I am from La Mesa, California and pretty new to the world of poker chips in general. I have been hosting a home game for about a year with a bunch of dads from around the neighborhood and am looking into getting a decent set of chips for us to play with. I have been researching different types of chips, and I think I have decided on the the outlaw chips from DiscountPokerShop. I did buy a sample set of the new 8-bit set on BRProPoker and absolutely love them, but I can't justify getting a full set of that. Eventually (a few years down the road) I would love to make some custom chips, maybe a video game design or something with the omega symbol stamped around the edges.

Welcome!

1. You came to the wroooong place buddy ;)
2. The outlaws seem to be fairly decent for what they are (metal insert chips):

3. You won’t find much love for any metal slugged chips on this pretentious forum, but if you like them and will use them, go for it
4. You can also check the classifieds, recommend looking for some mario as a thought if you fancy a video game theme that’s available:

5. A step up from Outlaws but more expensive at 47c a chip are Tina Hybrids, on SUN Mold, WEB Mold or GREEK Mold Hybrid - tons of designs, you can order through here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/chips-new-sun-mold-web-mold-greek-mold-april-2025.129138/

If you guys already have a set in play, most advice here would be to jump in the deep end and go for something better than the Outlaws. But it’s all subjective.

Welcome! My granddaughter just moved to LA Mesa, her husband is in the navy in SD.

Spend some time researching here, browse the classifieds, etc, because if you're like most of the folks here then your taste in chips will change over time. Get samples and compare.

Thank you so much for the advice. I did see those Mario chips and thought they were really cool as well. I know coming to a poker chip forum and saying I was going to get metal slug chips was probably a going to ruffle some feathers, but until I know exactly what I want I figured these were cheap enough for a base set. I also wanted to thank @Hobbyphilic for his videos on youtube.

Currently, we are using one of the guys chip sets he got on offer up, which I believe are also metal slugged chips (see attached). I couldn't find an exact set online, but I believe this to be the same brand? https://www.thepokerstore.com/collections/tournament-pro-11-5-gram-poker-chips

We generally play once a month, so I'm not looking to break the bank quite yet. I figure the outlaws are better than just dice chips. We also want denominations on the chips as well. We usually play tournament style for a few hours on a Friday night.

Cool - no judgement here. Most of us started with 11.5g dice chips. Main thing is you’ve got a game going.

One other thought, if you’re not in too much of a rush, there is a new Tina Hybrid in the works that’ll likely be one of the best for design and offers denoms from 5c up, something to consider, likely another month or two until order though:

If you’re leaning towards the Outlaws, maybe pull the trigger. Then come back here and start buying moar…

It's not that I was leaning towards the outlaws, it's just for the price it would give me my own cheap set that if I needed to, could take to someone else's house. I have been looking into the TINA's, what is the difference between those and say the 8-bit one from brpropoker? Are they both ceramic, just the TINA's have stickers instead of it actually being printed on?

What stakes do you guys play? Tournament or cash?
We have been doing a tournament style. We are a bunch of dad's with somewhat young kids. We have been tweaking the rules as we have been going on, but it's a $20 buy in, with unlimited rebuys until a certain time. We did try unlimited rebuys until the end of the night, but we usually try to have the games go for a few hours on a Saturday night since we all need to be up the next morning lol.

Currently our set consists of the following (they are non denominational, see pictures from last post). I set these values but am looking into getting chips with denominations:

$1 White - 154
$5 Red - 150
$25 Blue - 97
$50 Green - 54
$100 Black - 49

Last time I gave out $700 worth of chips and started at 1/2 blinds and usually just doubled that every 20 minutes. The later the night, we usually ramped up blinds every 15 minutes. Rebuys got you $700 worth of chips.

Again, still tweaking as we go on.

Tina has ceramic, which has the design printed directly onto the chip, no label, and they also hybrids that use a printed paper label. Ceramic chips typically all have images printed directly onto the chips.
