I've been hosting a monthly game for around a year now. Almost everyone is brand new to Poker (myself included), but I think we've been making good progress in terms of play and setup. It's mainly about catching up and drinking anyway haha. I've learned a ton from the PCF community and all the info on tournament structure in particular has been invaluable! We started with a T5 100bb structure and after some experimenting landed on T25 200bb which seems to fit really well for a 3-4 hour game with (typically) 8 of us. Lots of limping still so I've found T25 to be more convenient than T5 for the early levels when we've still got everyone in.
In regard to chips... I started with an old dice set from college and after our first game last year bought some Casino Royals. At the time I remember thinking "surely this is the end". I'm currently sitting next to a bunch of samples (including CPC for some reason) - what have I gotten myself into lol.
