Hello, I'm fairly new to the forum and these are a few questions that I have had for a while but can't seem to find answers anywhere, any help would be much appreciated!
1. When betting, is there a specific way I should place my chips? I've looked online a lot and it seems as though higher denoms should be placed on top, but I'd need clarification on that please.
2. Is there any rule as to which chips you use? If I have a $100 chip and 10 $10 chips, would it be preferable for me to use the $100 when calling a bet of that size, or does it not really matter?
3. In a home cash game, how do I distribute chips? I have found calculators online but they act as though you are working out how many chips you need. I have a cash game with a very small $5 minimum buy-in and I was wondering what the best way to distribute my chips is? Do players need more 0.01$ or 0.05$ chips for .01/.02 blinds? Sorry if this question doesn't make sense, I just am unsure how many of each denomination a player needs, as it seems to be a sort of grey area.

Thank you for any help and I apologise if these questions have been answered anywhere or if I have posted this in the wrong place, I'm new so any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you for your help.

Welcome.

1. When betting just make it clear, usually verbalizing is easiest. Otherwise just keep it consistent: some people stack them equally next to eachother, some people make a tower, whatever works. Saying it out loud is the way I prefer when dealing, so I dont have to do it for you.
2. Doesnt matter. Only annoying if its like 2 whole barrel of quarters for $10 when you have enough dollar chips. Unless its very annoying, no one will care.
3. Allll kinds of conversations on this. 1cent/2cent blinds are very very low though, even my baby stakes is 5c/10c. You only need 100 of your lowest denom, usually used for the blinds. The next highest would be 200 chips because thats your workhorse: in 1/3, the $5 comes in barrels. In 5c/10c, the quarter comes in barrels. Let us know what games you run and how many players you expect and we can help out.

No apologies necessary, thats why we're here.

As long as your bet is placed in front of you the arrangement does not matter. Leave bets in front of each player until all betting is done for the round, then draw all bets into the pot.

I agree with NotRealNameNoSir

Only thing I can add, and only if you want to get into the weeds, is:

For example: You are playing .25c/.50c (As you seem to play lower stakes). Your chip denoms at your table at, i imagine, are .25c/1/5 chips.

When you place a bet with chips, stack them UP TO the value of the next chip in play. So if you were to bet $2 with your .25c chips, you would grab 8 chips in your hand and move them forward over the betting line and then you would then place them all down in a stack, then cut the stack into 4 chips each.

Similarly, if you were to bet $4 with your .25c chips, you can take 16 chips and move them across, then cut them down to 4 in each stack, showing its $4.

If you were to bet $75 with $5 chips, you could take 15 chips and cut them into 5 in a stack, of three stacks beside each other, because everyone knows the next highest chip is $25 and thats what those stacks will be.

Not sure where I heard this from. Take the above advice and just say the amount you want to bet and you will never go wrong.

1. I prefer that people verbalize their bet when putting forward their chips. The general "rule" is that high denomination chips are placed where they are most easily visible, in front or on top.

2. Doesn't matter. Again, a verbal accompaniment to a forward chip action helps to dispel any miscommunication or mistakes in chip math.

3. The workhorse chips are usually the next 2 chips denoms above your blind chips, so get the most of those. If you play pennies, then nickels and quarters are your workhorses. If you play dollars, then 5s and 25s are your go to. But you can buy as many chips as you can afford if that's what floats your boat.

Thank you for your help. I'm only just starting out with my game but none of us have the means to play with much more than a $5 buy-in. I have slowplay chips, with 200 white chips, 100 red, 100 blue, 100 yellow and 10 plaques. There are 5 of us playing. I want it to be low stakes because I want to train myself to become a better player (Learn how to read people, ranges, equity, pot odds, etc.) without risking too much. That's why the stakes are so low, eventually I will increase them. Thank you very much for being so kind and helpful and I appreciate all of the help!

Not a problem. Sounds good, but I dont think betting with pennies will help you define ranges or read people. Either way, have fun!

Id advise 5c/5c or 5c/10c, so lowest denom is a nickel. You'll technically have shorter stacks but you dont need pennies.

Buyin for $5 gets you
10 nickels, blue
14 quarters, white
1 dollar, whatever you want, plaques if it feels cool.
Can easily go up to $10 or rebuy.

Welcome!

When distributing wagers in front of you, the goal is that the camera dealer and players can clearly see your bet / raise. This is primary reason for inserts (spots) on poker chips, to make it easier to see the bet.

for a $4 bet using .25 chips, I like to stack them in groups of 4 offset on top of each other. If the bet is $2 in .25 I would stack them in 4s side by side.

The starting stacks for players will depend on blinds and the amount of bank you have. I would highly suggest the links in my signature to get started (landscape on mobile)
