Hi,

I am interested in buying a 500 chip set to accommodate cash games + tournament. (With this flexibility, I know I'm very limited and can probably only do T5, and limited players)

I need help knowing how many of each chips should I be buying.

Tournament:
T5, 10/10/7/3.

Cash game:
.25/.50 buyin from $25 - $100.
20/20/x 0.25/1/5

How many chips should I be getting for each denomination.

ALSO, is this the right thing to do? I don't want to spend more money on a set bigger than 500.

You need separate sets. The cash game face value of a tournament chip is huge relative to the tournament buy in. It is too easy for tournament chips to leak into the cash games if the same set is used for both events.

Sure, we would like to trust our players. Many hosts have learned better from hard experience that people aren't always so trustworthy. Best to remove temptation and keep cash chips separate from tournament.

I feel strongly enough about this that I would play tournament with dice chips rather than comingle cash & tournament games from the same set.

I'm going to third getting two sets. Do you have a set now?

Get two sets with one theme with secondaries for denoms that overlap

The best way to do this, if you must have a dual use set, is to get a cash set that, say, covers a decent 0.25/0.50 cash game, that can also be used as a 0.25 base tourney. That way, migrating denoms are worth exactly the same in terms of real money.

For tourney structure, take a decent T25 base and divide all numbers by 100. You may need to fiddle with the blinds a bit.

Preferably you are going to want two sets. One for tournament and one for cash. But you do have options with a T0.25 set up. Where the chips are worth the same amount is whats printed on them.

@BGinGA has laid out exactly how to do it.

My set is a double set (but I also have 1100 chips). the good thing I have is in home games we really only use 0.25 and $1 chips with very little use of $5 chips. So if someone tries to pocket a big denom chip from a tournament and use it in a cash game I'm going to know about it really quick. I also run small games and know everyone very well so I dont sweat it.

Another thing you can do, if you are on a budget. Get chips without denominations, you can chance the value whenever you play cash or tournament.
