Hello!

I came across a listing for some old (supposedly clay) chips, and I was curious if anyone recognizes them. The texture does appear to be clayish; the mold is the four suits repeating. I searched about a bit and didn't find anything matching.

They look like the Bee plastic chips without the “Bee”

edit: on second thought, they look different…the concentric circles are closer to the edge on the bee chips

I could be wrong, but they look like plastic.
Thanks for taking a look. I thought the edges looked dry/chalky like clay, but maybe they’re just dirty.

That’s what i was just looking at, but the hearts look different to me.

Something about the OPs chips make me guess plastic, but I can’t really point to anything specific.
One thing I noticed that was similar on both was the “stem” on the clubs and spades are really short and stubby…almost a little bump.

What counts as “cheap” for something like this? (If, indeed, it’s a match)

i don't know, $0.10-$0.15 a chip maybe would be worth the risk? i wouldn't be throwing a fortune at these regardless, but i would pick them up for a few bucks. the case looks neat.

Without holding them, the only way that I am aware of is to get some good pics of the sides. You want to look for small circles or dimples, which should show if they’re plastic. The injection molding process leaves nubs that need to be broken off to clean up the chip.

Technically, all parties may be right. It probably was made by compression mold, and with ingredients that could have been considered an early type of plastic, but perhaps more similar to the "paranoid" style material.

The chips in that thread are definitely compression-molded (i.e. they're "clay" chips). The spots are irregular and non-uniform with artifacts that clearly resulted from compression molding.

The chips in this thread have mold debossings that are a perfect match for the mold debossings on the chips in the other thread. Therefore I conclude that the chips that @Servo found are likewise compression-molded clay chips.

In the other thread @BGinGA says they weren't made by ASM but I don't know who else would have made them, other than the predecessors Burt or possibly USPCC.

Chipguide doesn't have many examples of the 24Suits mold, so perhaps these chips are fairly uncommon.
