Hi All,
I have a 3 table tournament I'm hosting tonight. It's the most people I've had at my game so far and I think I have everything pretty well in order. I keep going back and forth on my blind schedule though. Any advice would be helpful. Here is the info:

  • 22-24 players
  • 25K starting stacks
  • $150 buyin with a $25 bounty chip
  • Re-buys through the first 4 (maybe 5) rounds (looking for advice here)
  • We will have professional dealers at the tables
  • Ideal tournament length is 5-6 hours

Here is the blind schedule. I think it's probably a little too long. But before I continue to make revisions I thought I'd ask here first!

Quick check that I always do when I build a tourney...what is the last level of blinds and how many blinds will be in play. 30 buy ins (with rebuys) = 750,000 chips in play.

When you hit level 18 there will be 30 BB in play (750,000 divided by SB 25,000), so the tourney should have ended by then or right there. Heads up play someone may have 20 BB and the other person 10BB, and blinds would be 1-2. etc...

Agree with your assessment level 16 it should probably be over, certainly will be over by level 18.

I would do 12 minute breaks, not 10.

I would do rebuy over at level 5. Give people the chance to play more! Extra level won't kill ya.

I would add a 1500-3000 level. But now I see you are removing the T500 chips. Must not be the pinks, because I would want to keep those in play as long as I could!!!

**Not a pro at doing this either, just my observations if you wanted them!

Thanks for the feedback. I actually had a 1500/3000 and I removed it to try and speed it up a little. Ideally I would not want the tournament to last 7 hours so I think I need to try and find a way to speed it up a little. I think 6 hours max is the sweet spot.

I prefer rebuy periods to end on a break, so between 4-5 here. I also prefer allowing a player to forfeit chips to rebuy, thus when break rolls around you can announce to the room that this is their last chance. Short stacks will appreciate it.

I agree with @doublebooyah85 , you need at least 12 minute breaks. Depending on the number of toilets you have available, you may need more time to get everyone through.

Given that your rebuys end with over 40 (over 30 at level 5) Big Blinds in a starting stack, I would not expect too many rebuys - though that will vary by player aggressiveness. This you would need to titrate to your group. However, I would be inclined to ditch the 100/300 level, to put more money in the pot from rebuys, and to extend breaks without extending the overall tournament length.

Forfeit rule for sure @Poker Zombie! Prevents shitty play from people jammin all ins.

Also agree dump the 100-300 and just make the 100-200 last longer if that’s your intention. Or eliminate to increase rebuys like Zombie mentioned.

When they forfeit do those chips just go back to the house? meaning not in play anymore?

Yes if a player has 3000 chips left he just forfeits them and they go back into the bank no one can win them. Then they can rebuy for the $25K.

This prevents from a bunch of people just going all in with less than 5000 chips right before the final break and also when someone maybe only has a couple hundred chips at any level. Forfeit chips back to the bank and get a new starting stack!

For example if I was playing in your tournament and it was break and re-buy was over….if I had less than 10,000 and chips I would probably just forfeit and rebuy lol but I’m a degen.

what happens to the bounty chip then? I'm inclined to make them go all in so someone ends up with the bounty!? And don't worry... we are all degen's here!

Good question. Probably can’t do it with a bounty tourney.

There are multiple ways you could do it with a bounty...
  1. Player that surrenders the bounty chip cashes it himself. He effectively took himself out by surrendering. This encourages more rebuys because they are effectively getting a discount on the rebuy.
  2. Bounty chip remains in play, but there is no extra bounty added. The extra is added to the prize pool.
  3. Bounty chip remains in play, and the player gets an additional bounty chip. Because they weren't knocked out, the bounty remains active. Since the buy-in includes a bounty, they get a double (or more if multiple rebuys from short) price on their head. This discourages rebuys from short as they become a bigger target.
I like the forfeit chips rule, because it ends the luck-fest short shoves near the end of the rebuy period. You can play your stack to the best of your ability, and top off on that last break without giving chips to your opponent. I've witnessed shoving on the last rebuy hand with 10 big blinds, only to get it chopped up and being stuck with 7 big blinds when the blinds go up. Not fun. I've also been waiting to shove, only to have a player go in the tank and running out the level, thus taking away my opportunity. All those problems go away with the forfeit rule.

The WSOP finally adopted the forfeit rule about 5-6 years ago. I'd have to read-up to see what their bounty rules are (I don't play bounty tournaments that allow unlimited rebuys).

I think I'm going to switch to 15 minute blinds and go with the following. With breaks this makes it a bit shorter. I will have professional dealers and 2 decks per table. The time on the chart does not account for breaks. I'll update that when I'm 100% finished.
