Hi,

I'm peeking my head down the rabbit hole of poker chips now that my home game is starting to catch on. Currently we use basic blank clay chips from Amazon, and I'd like to upgrade them.

My home game has been .10/.25 NLHE with 10c, 25c, $1, and $5 chips. We've found that for this game, the 10c chips do little more than posting SB which slows down the game with people somewhat often needing to make awkward amounts of change. Because of this we are considering changing the denominations of our chips.

I've read a bit on this site and it seems that if we stick with the .10/.25 game, the best course of action may be to use 5c/25c/$1/$5 for chip denominations but this doesn't really resolve the issues with using 10c chips because I predict the 5c chips are pretty much only going to be used for posting SB, and there is going to be twice as many otherwise useless chips on the table.

Because of this, I am leaning towards making it a .10/.20 game with 10c/$1/$5 denominations with a 100bb starting stack of 20x10c, 8x$1, and 2x$5. One fewer denomination will simplify things and make it so the least valuable chips have a use other than posting SB and bloating the table.

I'm looking for some recommendations for higher quality chips which have a 10c denomination. So far I have a preference for ceramic chips because I've gotten some samples from Nevada Jacks and I quite like them. Too bad they don't carry anything lower than 25c. Also, any thoughts about my thought process above is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

(The closest set I have been able to find are the turbo chips from thepokerstore, though the lack of $ symbol means I will use 10/100/500 as opposed to my preference of 10c/$1/$5, and I find the colors somewhat garish.)

.10/.25 is cumbersome for sure. It is generally recommended that you abandon 5c and 10c chips altogether and simply move the game to .25/.25. As you’ve found, it basically plays the same.
I guess you could do a .10/.20 game with plenty of .10 chips, but the game would also play just like .25/.25.
5c chips are best for 5c/10c only.

Maybe try playing 25c / 25c and see how that goes. Your game may be growing out of the 5c chip.

I think you can semi custom the Nevada jacks, they probably would make a 5c chip for you if you wanted.

Yeah, that was my idea too. Playing .10/.25 means that SB should defend less often than .25/.25 or .10/.20. If SB rarely folds in your games, i.e. isn't very GTO-like you might as well go for .25/.25 and make everyone's life easier.

PS! Was fairly disappointed that this thread wasn't about collecting chips from tiny countries. I guess only Monaco has a casino so it would be a quick chase. :D

Welcome to PCF. I agree with both above, and I speak from experience as I played .10/.25 at my home game, and it was a PIA to use the. 05 chips. We changed to .25/.25 and will never look back. I have since sold my .05 chips just so we can never be tempted to use those again.
I only give out 10 - .25 Chips to each of my 8 players, the remaining made up of 11 - .50 and 12 - $1.00 chips and 1 - $5.
We have a $25 buy in and 100 BB
If I didn't use the .50 chip, then I would either use 8- .25 or 12- .25 chips, 1-$5 and the remainder in $1's.

All,

Thanks for the great welcome and the suggestions. After talking with some of my players, it seems a .25/.25 game is the right idea. We don't play a very GTO-heavy game (lots of newcomers and limping) so I don't think anyone will be upset with the higher small blind.

For those who know GTO things: I'm curious curious, in theory does a higher small blind mean the SB should play tighter because they are forced to put more money in the pot out of position, or are they incentivized to play a bit wider range since they have a bigger blind to defend? Probably a bit more complicated than that but I could see it going either way.

(Also @Rakrul sorry my title typo bait'n'switched ya. It looks like Andorra and San Marino have casinos too!)

Doing even blinds really doesn't change much except if there are no raisers then the small blind gets to see a flop without having to put more money in the pot. If there Is a raise, then he can fold or call, or raise himself.
As the small blind, he still has that option to fold, call or raise when the action gets back to him pre flop.

Welcome!

.25/.25 - I'm a plus one

The other issue with a .05 or .1 that no one mentioned directly is availability if you go with actual clay chips. They don't sell clay chips on Amazon ;)

Welcome. As I like to have plenty of chips on the table I like my 10/20 game I must say. With .10-.50-1.00-2.50. we also do play some 25/25. It's doing fine.

$.10/$.20 with $40 buy ins baby! Best micro stakes! I find $.05/$.10 with $20 buy ins plays too small... but mixed games pot limit woth $40 buy ins can still yeaild some quality pots with the right players.

10 cent awesomeness!

Try to always follow the 4 to 5x 8ncrease on chipping denoms... so .10 × 5 = .50

I imagine $.10/$.25 does play kind of weird because no way to follow the conventional flow of 4 to 5 x increase.

As far as availability on ceramics... @BR Pro Poker can do a semi custom on one of their stock designs if you order enough of each denom. Somewhere around $1 per chip and they'd be happy to make you a dime chip.

I think 10c/20c is perfectly doable like Ben8257 has posted above, but keep in mind that another advantage to 25c/25c is that it is more suitable to growth in your game in terms of stakes. If in a few years (or months) if you decide to go 25c/50c or higher you just need a small addon instead of a new set of chips or racks of dimes that don't see any play. I love me a good dime chip but it's defiantly more efficient to go 25c/25 in the long run. I also get that not everyone is looking for economy or efficiency in their set or collection of sets. I like more sets and more chips so I don't mind having racks of nickels, dimes, and quarters around, I actually prefer it. Dimes are much harder to come across in the wild, not impossible, just more difficult than quarters. I think it comes down to what you and your players want to play. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to PCF! I would agree with some of those above. I started with .10/.25 when we switched to cash, but shortly went to .25/.25 and it largely plays the same and you need fewer chips. Enjoy the process!

Reasons to keep nickels or dimes in a game "I call and I am doing it all in Nickels Dennis, because tonight I hate you."
