Friends, it's that time of year where the little kid in all of us might remember hoping for the latest video game release. Whether that means you were excited for that home Pong game, the new Double Dragon, a fresh Halo, or the 179th Anniversary Edition of John Madden Football, video games are often tied to our winter holiday memories.

Want in the drawing?

Post in this thread by completing one of the following sentence starters! A random draw will take place on Christmas morning!

1 - A video game I remember asking for as a kid was...

2 - The best video game gift I ever got for Christmas was...

3 - My favorite memory of playing video games during winter holidays is...

You get: One (1) deck of authentic Nintendo playing cards (they are plastic, thin, and SLICK!) and one (1) partial sample set of Super Mario World chips (my T5 tournament breakdown with one $5, one $25, one $100, and one $500). [D&D Book NOT Included!]

Good luck, and have fun sharing stories!

My favorite memory of playing video games during winter holidays is...

Pong.

By myself.

Left hand versus right hand.

It's not that I didn't have friends, but sometimes in Anchorage, the snow was enough to actually prevent even kids from going out, which meant making up games.

In thx!

A video game I remember asking for as a kid was...Super Mario Bros 3! Played that thing nonstop too!
One of my all-time favorites. I remember playing it over at my grandma's house with my uncles who were probably in their early 20s at the time. The game was just so huge and full of secrets. Things like falling through the white blocks or the warp whistles were absolutely mind-blowing stuff for a little kid!

While I can't lay claim to some self-Ponging, I've definitely improvised some solitary gaming along the way. I feel like I must have attempted trading Pokemon from one game to another without a real second player at some point. Gotta catch 'em all, after all!
A video game I remember asking for as a kid was... a Wii. Hours and hours of fun.
As I was discussing with my friends last night, it's odd that I never actually had a Wii. So many classic games on that system, not to mention the Virtual Console. I did, however, get a Wii U. There are dozens of us. Dozens!

The best video game gift I ever got for Christmas was Myst. The only computer in the house was a Mac. I think Myst was originally a MacOS exclusive so I was in luck. There was life before Myst, and life since.

This game was outrageous and fun times! Catching in fire, shooting from Downtown, and ridiculous dunks!

I have never played Myst, but everyone who was the right age when this came out says pretty much the same thing. We never really had a computer until much, much later - but I remember reading about Myst in magazines like EGM and GamePro and thinking it must be an epic experience!

Yes! I still have a copy of this laying around. An all-time great. My brother and my cousins also fell in love with it's N64 offspring of NBA Hang-Time. I loved all the weird unlockable players you could find, and the arcade basketball action was perfect for multiplayer fun.

A TRIFECTA:
A video game I remember asking for as a kid was also the best video game gift I ever got for Christmas, AAAAAND my favorite memory of playing video games during winter holidays is about

LEFT 4 DEAD. Incredible episodic shooter, just an amazing game that my friends and dad spent days on. Little tips and tricks to finish Expert mode, yelling and laughing with friends over break. No bullshit, didnt bother with any of the lower difficulties. When we all extracted off the top of the hospital in No Mercy I almost cried.

Awesome thread. Love seeing others memories about video games. I asked for a bunch of games when I was a kid dating back to Atari/NES/Gameboy, but my favorite had to be Golden Eye. My buddies and I spent countless hours playing matches against each other and that's why its one of my favorite. Same thing with Super Smash brothers.

A video game I remember asking for as a (big) kid was Breath of the Wild. My son just got a switch and love all Zelda products so being able to free explore was amazing. Plus my oldest has put hundreds of hours in and it gives us something to do/talk about it. My 3 year old calls it Hiyah and likes running around the world and making him say it. Makes me lol a lot.

The best video game gift I ever got for Christmas was the original NES from my dad in 1986 when I was 10. It came with SMB, Zelda, and Baseball. SMB and Zelda were my things, but Baseball was OUR thing. My dad didn't love video games, but he loved baseball. My parents were divorced, so I would lug the whole setup back and forth every other weekend and we would always play a few games.

A video game I remember asking for as a kid was Riven, the sequel to Myst. Had such a blast figuring out the puzzles in that beautiful world. I attribute a lot of my problem solving and critical thinking skills development to Myst and Riven actually, I think I was only 8 or 9 when I started playing them.

It's always great when you get a game that brings a whole group together. For me, that's the epitome of gaming. Lord knows I've played plenty of solo games, but the best memories are with the crew having fun.

GoldenEye...one of the touchstones of my "millennial" life. Pizza. Some cold sodas. GoldenEye on the TV. Four controllers AND the boys? Great times.

I haven't played BotW yet, and I really need to. LttP is in my top five of all-time, and I think BotW might top it. Making memories with your kids probably really seals the deal. I remember playing the original Super Mario Bros. on an old black-and-white TV with my dad - he convinced us that some levels were ice levels and I still laugh about that.

Again, family connections seem to be a recurring theme. Love to hear these stories. I think it's interesting - for all the talk of video games as isolating, they can really bring us together with the people we love.
A video game I remember asking for as a kid was Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Treasure of Tarmin for Intelivision.
That game was revolutionary.

Imagine having all the rich imagination of D&D without visuals and then adding this to it! It must have been mind blowing filling in the blanks with your mind. It's funny, as a retro gamer, you go back and look at games that were cutting edge visuals at the time and they look antiquated. At the time, however, this was like BEYOND HD in how it worked with the good old imagination added on top!

Games are SO good for this. My buddy who is a decently high level Fancy Business Man (TM) swears that D&D helped him acquire many of the skills that have helped him to succeed.

I haven't played Riven, but maybe I should do a Myst/Riven run. Could be a fun experience!

My favorite memory of playing video games during winter holidays is playing Cool Boarders 2 with my dad after he got me a playstation for Christmas. The dude was not at all a video game player. Crushes a double backflip and beat me in the Competition Mode. Still blows my mind!

It's on Steam, and there's a sale going so...DO IT

The best video game gift I ever got for Christmas was the original Nintendo entertainment system! Our family wasn't rich and we had that console forever. Didn't really replace it until I was in my teens and got a pc and was playing counterstrike alpha. I'm partial to SMB2 personally, really enjoyed playing that game!

Thanks for the giveaway!

The best video game present I ever got was my XBOX 360. Growing up my parents never let us know that we struggled. But I knew not to ask for something like a game console because it was just out of the question, too expensive. We had a used Playstation 2 that was plenty good enough, if I wanted to play video games that's what I could play. But by this time they had already stopped production of PS2 games, and it was getting hard to get new games. My dad is a high school drop out and has always worked factory jobs until this particular year he got a very good job working for a medical supply company in my home town. Well his company was very small and threw a huge Christmas party for all the employees and basically hosted there version of a game show and my dad won us an XBOX 360 along with a bunch of other toys and gifts. My parents came home from the Christmas party and was so excited to show me and my siblings what they won they decided to give it to us that night (Christmas Eve). And so that Christmas eve as a family we played our new Xbox 360. Still to this day my favorite gaming console.

The best video game gift I ever got for Christmas was a Nintendo 64 from my dad. I haven't even asked for it but he knew everyone has or was going to have one. It was the best gift I ever got.

I love stories like these. My brother and I used to try to convince my mom to play Street Fighter II with us...and she'd inevitably button mash her way to a win. Always a good time!

A little birdy told me that they might be remaking it? I'll have to take a look!
Pitfall ..... And I got it. I played that game for thousands and thousands of hours
My VERY limited experience with Pitfall involves playing it on an Atari console dug out of a closet in a room with VERY old shag carpeting. The aesthetic is forever connected for me. I love the audio in this game!
A video game I remember asking for as a kid was...Duck Hunt!

The best video game gift I ever got for Christmas was...Duck Hunt!
Man, Duck Hunt was pretty influential as a kid. It seems like an entire generation was trained to feel anger at that laughing dog!
Star Raiders
Tele-Games(Atari)
Dominating my cousins on their Atari

Thanks!
Interesting - now we are into some games that I'm not really familiar with, even listening to a lot of retro games content. I'm sure I've heard something about Star Raiders before, but I'm not sure. Is Tele-Games a "digital sports compilation" sort of title?
Duck hunt

Duck hunt

Duck hunt

Played that game all night the first night. Probably first couple of nights. On our tiny little tube tv. Maybe 15”.
Another vote for Duck Hunt! Maybe this could make for a fun custom chip set...or at least some dealer buttons!

Seems like this crowd is averaging out to the NES for their first console, which makes a lot of sense giving general demographics. I too cut my teeth on the NES, and that was only because my brother and I were able to share gifts for Christmas and our birthdays - it was a valuable factor in getting video games as kids because on our own it would be too big of a gift!
A video game I remember asking for as a kid was... Pokemon Yellow for my gameboy back then!! Man time flies!
It is amazing. I joke with my younger friends that I'm amazed that there are more than 151 Pokemon now. I never played Yellow, but my cousin got it to differentiate between the Red and Blue pairing shared by my brother and I. I always thought it was a cool way to differentiate the games with Pikachu following you around on screen.

Damn, man. It's stories like these that bring a little emotion to the table! It sounds like a lot of people here can relate to family members scraping together video game memories. Just goes to show the value our families can have in our lives.
A video game I remember asking for as a kid was... Mega Man!
The original? That is quite the throwback. My neighbors were REALLY into Mega Man 2, and I ended up getting Mega Man 3 as a used copy early on. To this day 3 is still my favorite, but I really love the classic Mega Man series. The first one has some really difficult parts, and it also has a crazy speed run scene!
The best video game gift I ever got for Christmas was a Nintendo 64 from my dad. I haven't even asked for it but he knew everyone has or was going to have one. It was the best gift I ever got.
I feel like I had to wait a while before we could get a 64, but it was such a magical system. Being able to jam four player games with friends was just so great. Do you remember what launch game you ended up with? I remember my uncle playing Wave Race 64 - the water was mesmerizing!

Thank you to everyone who is sharing! Great nostalgia vibes!

The best video game gift we ever got for Christmas was way back in '75. It was from Sears & the game was called Pong. I was 5 years old & my brother, sister & I had never seen anything like it before...

Honorable mentions:
Adventure
RBI Baseball
Doom
Super Mario 64
Goldeneye
Gran Turismo

Mine are all the same it’s 1999 and all everyone has been talking about is Pokémon. My mom spent what little extra money we had getting me and my brother Game Boy Colors with newly released Pokémon Yellow and the paperback game guide. I played that all day that Christmas and it was great.
