Hosts Thoughts on the old “Something Came Up” Cancellation (1 Viewer)

As a host for 15 years I found that cash games are a lot easier to host than tournaments! Cash games are easier because you get the core 4 and work off that. With tournaments invites matter more because usually you need a set amount to have it and especially when you have multi tables. My experience serves me the best way to approach the maybes is to get the forsures out of the way and than hound the maybes until I get a definitive answer . It’s not the ideal approach but my guys don’t care like they used to if I said you can’t come to my next game they wouldn’t care fml lol that’s why now days we stick to 1 table cash games no bs… but damn I miss my tournies :(
My initial game was tourney style 10 players but we switched to an 8 player cash game a few years later.
Cash game is the best, as the host can set the buy in, the blinds, and people can leave if they don't want to rebuy or top up.

With who knows how many rebuys in an hour and a half only paying 3 places is kinda shitty.
Yeah, spread the wealth. Kind of lottery like otherwise. Our STT’s pay top three. I wouldn’t recommend final table money but 5-6 is not unreasonable by any means and maybe an extra spot getting buy-in back.

Yea, people flaking on you is just about the most annoying thing on the planet. It's often a casual, "Oh actually, I'm hanging with Bob Rob before he leaves town for a bit!" Mmhmm. Your number has been deleted, sir.

How about, in this digital age, people send you their buy-in instead of just saying Yes.

Whether you refund the buy-in or not for a no show is up to you, but both options will focus the mind a little more.

I would favour not refunding it, then they can decide if their other option is worth a buy-in or not. And you could use the buy-in to appease other players: "Joe can't make it so we are one short, but here's a bonus 1/8 buy in" or "here's a shot of whiskey on Joe"

You’d HAVE to make sure everyone knows this before sending invites.

I mean late cancellations are annoying and something we all want to avoid but just taking someone’s money seems scummy to me. It would leave a sour taste in my mouth if I was a player.

Correct. Whenever you take a deposit you make the terms clear.
