Hello! I'm looking into getting my first cash set, but I'm not sure exactly how many chips I should get per denom to comfortably run .25/50 - 1/2 9 handed. I was thinking like 300x.25, 300x1.00, 300x5.00, 100x25.00, and like 20x100.00. Any insight or opinions on this would be great! Thanks!

Start with how much money you think people are going to show up with and hit the table. . So if 10 players are willing to spend $500 each on a given poker night, you should have a bank of chips equal to $5,000. Work backwards from there.

300 quarters is way too many. I'd get 100, but some would like 140, or 160. Other than that, it's a decent breakdown. Either do 800 chips, or "future-proof" your set with more 25's and 100's.

If you have the budget for 1000 chips, I'd do something like:

25¢ x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 400
$25 x 200
$100 x 100

That's a bank of over $17,000.

I would add that you should consider your player pool too for your chip count.
I play with a group of friends who are not poker players, and the game runs smoother when there are more fracs on the table than is generally recommended here (10 per player). Everyone loves to limp into the flop and then min raise after, so the small denomination is used more often than it really should be.

Even I would say you don't need any more than 200 of the smallest denomination though. 20 per player is plenty even if it's a min raise limpfest like my games can be.

This makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

I would get 100/200/400/200/100 in your exact denominations or 200/200/300/200/100, 200/200/200/80/20, you get the idea

Just balance with your budget. A 1000 count of the cheapest chips can be a drop in the bucket, but at the high end of several dollars per chip and even an ultra-efficient 600-chip set can be eyewateringly expensive. I think you can do a 700-800 chips set for your range of stakes 9-handed, no problem.

I'm thinking between 450-600 right now. Highly considering the Apache Royals, I have a few sample sets coming in soon.
They're a great mid-range option. 800 Royals plus storage, and you'll definitely be in that range. Tina sets are a good option, too.

This, 100%. I play those exact stakes - sometimes we have under a grand on the table; sometimes we have over two grand. I’ve owned 300 x $1 chips and I find that third rack to be a huge waste.
If you really want to own 1,000 chips, then your original breakdown is fine (though you can get away with fewer $25s under any circumstance.). But it’s only necessary if you want to make sure you have enough to cover a second table. Otherwise 700-800 chips is much more than enough.

This place is so gross lol, he's asking about .25/.50 up to 1/2 and you're giving him a 17k bank. SICK.
I was going to suggest what @Beakertwang posted but swap in a barrel of $500 and have "only" 4 barrels of $100. LOL

9 handed and $1/$2 NL. I'd be looking to cover around 3k-4k in chips to feel safe (that covers anything under those stakes). I agree with those saying too many .25's, and you could easily operate with a 700-800ct set.
